London to Stansted airport

I've heard it's mega expensive to get there.
I'm going to look for singles but any ideas about how to get there around 4.45am on a Tuesday morning and get back to London leaving around 1am on a Monday morning?! Cheapest routes I've not thought of? Bus??

There are Stansted trains at 03:40 and 04:10 from Liverpool Street, arriving at Stansted Airport at 04:30 and 05:00 respectively

Both trains, departing before 04:30, are effectively 'the day before', and are therefore valid on an off-peak ticket.

Any later train would require an Anytime ticket.

Tickets to Stansted have no off-peak discount, but you can buy an off-peak return to Audley End, which is the next stop after Stansted, for £23.60 return.

Buses (National Express, Easybus or Terravision) may be cheaper - check their websites for details.

so you're definitely allowed to get off one stop early at the airport and they won't get funny with you? is that the price of an off peak OPEN return?

Yes that is the price of the period return which gives a month to make the return journey. This ticket has restriction code 9A which does not prohibit break of journey, so you can finish short.

Unfortunately you've just fallen for an easy-to-make error, which also struck a friend of mine who turned up at Liverpool Street expecting to catch one of those trains to make an early flight – they're only on certain days! The 03:40 runs only on Mondays, whilst the 04:10 is Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun.

That is correct, if departing from Liverpool Street.

The OP needs to be aware of the fact that a ticket dated the previous day cannot be purchased so if he wants to travel on these trains with the Audley End Off-Peak Return ticket, the ticket must be purchased before midnight and dated correctly.

Bus it is.. Staying in stepney green and bus goes from bethnal green! I've been spoilt by living on the Thameslink (although I hate FFC obv)
