Does anyone know where I can get a copy of The Directory of Railway Stations by R.J.V Butt, I have seen a few copies of it but it seems to be only for sale at over £150.

I'm sure I didnt pay anything like that much.

You seem to have a moment when there aren't many copies around.

It gets frequent mention in Wikipedia because it is taken as an authority

It is just what it says - a directory - so not a good reading book.

Entries are typically: Station name, opening date or "Renamed from", railway company at the time, Closing date or "Renamed as"

It sounds like the kind of book I read, do you know any bookshops that would stock it?

Robert Humm may stock it: his shop is on Stamford station in Lincolnshire, alas as a lot of his stock is second hand and historical he may only have back additions which would naturally add to the cost.

I was given one as a present years ago, I'll ask the person who got me it where they obtained it from. It's a relatively new addition, a 2009 reprint.

I will say though, decent book, and a good read too.

Edit - this link should work http://www.roberthummbooks.co.uk/cg...D=quick&PN=General_Studies.html#aG2664#aG2664 It may be worth giving his shop a ring as I'm sure they'd be able to help.

I was trying to get a copy for a few weeks but the cost on E-bay for instance was very high. Fortunately, a copy was offered via a well-known bookseller at original cost £19.99 + £3.00 post, which I received in March. if you are doing serious research on the history of railway stations like myself, then the book is an essential. If you are just after general information then it's possibly better to ask someone with a copy for information, or see if it's stocked in a local library.

If you want to do some serious research on Station History, you need to use Butt's volume in tandem with Michael Quick's 'Railway Passenger Stations in Great Britain, A Chronology' Published by the Railway and Canal Historical Society. You also need to have to hand Col. M. Cobb's 'The Railway's of Great Britain, A Historical Atlas', Published by Ian Allan and for Ireland 'Johnson's Atlas & Gazetteer of the Railways of Ireland', Published by Midland Publishers. These tomes are not cheap, but are an essential if you are serious in your research. These tomes will direct you to essential list of sources that you may need. Quick and Cobb's tomes are the 'Holy Grail' of reference books that I own, but they are expensive, as I believe they are now out of print. (You may be looking at some serious money to get hold of them). Mine are not for sale at any price. That's how much I value them.
