There's a woman sitting behind me who apparently got sold the wrong ticket by guess who and had to purchase a new one, and she's currently phoning them to complain. What's she doing it now for? She's already been cut off once by a tunnel and its tunnels galore from here to KGX. :s

Just picked up my 'summer getaway' tickets......up to Newcastle on July 16th and back to London on August 4th. Good old Advance tickets swinging me a cheap deal there!

For my outbound leg I'll be on the 0630 so I can expect breakfast, but I'm coming home on the 1730. Is that going to be an Afternoon Tea or All Day train?

Following my previous mistake of booking into M I made sure to steer clear of 'Cattle First' and put myself into K. ;)

I travelled from York to Inverness on The Highland Chieftain last week and then back to Edinburgh on the southbound service. The menu produced as advertised, the chocolate tray bake is very recommended for those with a sweet tooth, and the friendly steward gave me two portions as I didn't have the sandwiches. Considering the restrictions in providing catering on board a train I have to say I was pleased with the full breakfast, the cheese omelette was tasty and the sausage was good quality. Despite being at the furthest end of coach M, the meal was served at a decent enough temperature. Easily a much better offer than Virgin I'm afraid. The staff were good on both services, particularly between Edinburgh and Inverness where they never really stopped. I had to refuse several offers of coffee otherwise I'd have spent half the journey in the toilet! The weather was lovely for the run up and down the Highland Main Line. The northbound run was done with a rewards ticket and the southbound journey to Edinburgh cost me a bargain £26.25. All in all, highly recommended. Well done East Coast!

Talking of EC 1st class, does seat 01 in coach M actually exist?
A couple of times recently I've ended up with an AP ticket with a reservation for this but there hasn't been any seat 01 (seating has started with 03) and this evening a lady approached me asking where seat 01 was as she couldn't find it.
One time I saw a small plaque at the entrance to the seating part of the carriage which listed seat 01 but there was no seat 01 to be found.
As far as I can remember, all been on the same service from Kings X.

It exists on mark IV's, but not HST, sometimes there may have to be a set swap which could cause the problem you mention

Ok. Seeing as that's three separate times on the same service that 01 hasn't been available you would have thought perhaps EC would have made just that one seat unreservable.

I have just looked at the Cafe bar menu on the East Coast web site and it shows that the only hot food available to purchase is before 1030am, is that correct?

No, cheese and ham toasties, tuna melts and all day breakfast paninis are available all day, all 4 quid each.

Forgive my ignorance but how do you melt tuna? I was on a flight the other day when they started talking about 'melts' and wondered about it then, well, for a nanosecond. (I live a very sheltered life). To me 'melt' is a verb, not a noun.

The Tuna isn't melted is it? Something is melted over the Tuna?

It's basically a bit of chess melted over tuna, they tend to mix the cheese with mustard and egg yolk.

It's one of those culinary inventions that allows restaurants and bars to sell something which is basically cheese and tuna on toast at a hugely extortionate price...

Does the plaque for M 01 not show a reservable wheelchair space?

Not sure. Thought it just says seats 01-50 (or something like that). Never noticed any weelchair spaces in 1st class. Will have a butchers next time.

What should I expect to receive on the Wednesday 21:00 Kings Cross to Newcastle first class?

(Please say alcohol...Newcastle is a scary place to be going round sober! ;))

"All Day" menu e.g. hot option or sandwiches, cake, crisps etc. Chance of a further portion further north depending on the fastidiousness of the crew.
2 to 4 runs of cold drinks also - including booze!

Excellent service from the East Coast team!

Within 10 minutes of leaving London I got a coffee, a beer, some crisps, a cake and just polished off the quiche!

Compared to my Virgin Train first class voyage from Manchester to London the other day where it took almost an hour to get one coffee (in a takeaway cup!), a tiny box of snacks and one subpar bacon sandwich!

Advertised as an All-Day service so it should be this according to their web site:
All Day Menu...

Please choose from the following

Cream cheese, celery, onion and mayonnaise with
Cheddar cheese and lettuce (v) or
British pulled pork with apple and cider chutney,
rocket and mayonnaise sandwiches
served with hand cooked crisps
or
Traditional deep filled quiche Lorraine with
red onion pastry served with mixed leaf
salad and bread roll
or
Summer vegetable Lasagne served with
mixed leaf salad and bread roll (v) (GF)*
-
Fire of London cake (v)
Rumour has it that forgotten burning cake like this one started the Great Fire of London on Pudding Lane. A dense fruit cake made with vine fruits, cherries and peel
-
A selection of fruit (v)

It can be beaten. Five minutes out of London Paddington and the trolley for first class came round, and we had not got to Maidenhead!!
