I have a reason to travel from Durham to Saltburn coming up in the following months. Inspired by this forum i decided to visit Durham station to investigate making the journey by train, however noticed there is no longer a direct train to Saltburn from here(i am currently missing the Saltburn line from my coverage). does anyone know why this service was axed?

My presumption is increased frequency, but shorter voyager services.
Surely this makes no sense when longer, less fequent trains would free up badly needed train paths?

Any views on this?

Yes i am also a voyager hater:-x

I think voyagers are great, although they are too small for the XC network and I've heard that the toilets smell. (I've never been affected by this).

Yeah TBH, as much as i love Voyagers, I would try to get on a HST if i had the option to, but only because HSTs are quite rare on the XC network.

I'm annoyed about the length of the Voyagers, because if the DFT granted VT more money, to buy longer Voyagers, Arriva wouldn't be ripping out the shop and a toilet when they get hold of 57(?) Voyagers.

Anyway.. I won't say anymore, because I have caused this thread to go totally off topic, for which i apologise.

There's still the same frequency of trains on the Darlo - Saltburn section, so you just need to make a change there. Only a few of the services ran beyond Darlington anyway and I think they were stopped because they were slow (some Voyagers now stop at Chester-le-Street to compensate).

Possibly because there are no connections, or the need to get stock to a depot for the overnight maintenance?

The trains from darlo appear to be every 30 minutes, so your change time at Darlington could be as little as 5 minutes. Which is less than the time you svaed by getting a decent train from Durham to Darlington.

The toilets sometimes smell, but not always!

Yeah youre probably right. Perhaps a handy service for north easteners arriving late on Sunday night from exotic destinations.

I would much prefer to travel straight through, though, a few minutes here and there makes little difference to me, although if you have to change trains, Darlington is a nice station to do it i find, unlike Thornaby....urghh:x

It's a lot better than it was a couple of years ago before that new booking office/waiting room was built. It's better than most stations around there, although that's not saying much... ;)
