Hi just been catching up on the re runs of What Ever Happened to the Likely Lads and was wondering if any wise sage on here knows what the class of multiple unit is that crosses the viaduct in the end title sequence? Its in full rail blue of the period and to my eyes the carriages look too long to be a first gen DMU. Any ideas?

I just had a look on YouTube and it seems to be two 3 car units; as this is Liverpool in the early 1970s I would suggest they are in fact class 502 / 503 EMUs.

Newcastle surely !?

A couple of Metro Cammel's presumably.

I love Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads. I'm at the stage in life where Bob and Terry's musings seem particularly relevant.

Most likely a Met Camm 101 unit, as a 1970 child they seemed to be the mainstay of services up here, with occasional Cravens 105s.
Love the Northern atlantean that howls past Terry too - ah memories :)

Favourite line:

Terry to Bob "I'd offer you a beer but I've only got six cans"

Yes, if I remember correctly, they're 2 x 4-car Met.Camm. dmus.
Tyneside had a batch of these for the Newcastle/Carlisle/Middlesborough/South Shields & Whitley Bay circulars.

Did Newcastle still have 3rd rail EMUs when this was filmed ?
In which case could they even be Metro Cammell EMUs, which ran until the late 1960s ?

Unlikely, as the first series was broadcast in early 1973 - so was probably filmed in 1972. The electrics south of the Tyne were gone by 1963 - north of the Tyne by 1967.

Found this on a 70's tv forum of some WHTTLL locations from 2007. The Byker viaduct looks recognizable but the street where the the Atlantean leaves Terry stranded is a lost world. Sorry this forum does not allow hyperlinks on a mobile device.

The Tyneside electrics were replaced by DMUs, AFAIK there were no other EMUs used on the system.
