55022 on hire to GBRf again

Spotted this in the Railway Herald:

GBRF HIRES DELTIC ONCE MORE

"GB Railfreight has hired Class 55 No. 55022 Royal Scots Grey for an unspecified period.

The ‘Deltic’ will be based at Springburn Works in Glasgow for hauling EMU and Translator coaches. The locomotive worked north on 24th April, from Bury on the East Lancashire Railway to Glasgow Springburn.

The loco will return to the ELR for its booked duty on the ‘Diesel Diner’ working on 5th July."

Why are GBRf so short of motive power that they need to do this again?

(I know there was a thread when Royal Scots Grey went on hire to do some freight work somewhere in the Northeast last year, but I'm damned if I can find it!)

That was traffic generated by the Alcan plant in Northumbria which I think has now closed. There was an article in Railways Illustrated and if my memory serves me correctly the loco was refueled by a lorry.

Are you sure? Most stock moves to and from merseyrail are worked with DBS 66s and translators?

Why are GBRf so short of motive power that they need to do this again?

It's not that they are short of locos as such, but these EMU moves
are fairly irregular, so:

a) it currently costs so much in fuel/paths/traincrew to keep bringing
a 66/7 up from Doncaster to Scotland every time these moves take
place that they are not able to make any money on the contract.

b) it would be a waste of a valuable asset to keep a 66/7 sat around in
Scotland for days on end


Which leaves option c) - hire in a heritage loco on a "power by the hour" basis!

There were/are usually 67s but DRS 47s and even 31459 appeared once -

To be honest that depends what engineering work is taking place. It's not often we have spare locos sitting around.

3 more class 66 locos should be entering service by the end of may and we have sourced another 2 from across Europe that should come over either later this year or early next year.

Also looking at the possibility of ordering 20+ brand new class 66s but this is only at the early talking stage yet.

This would be another 314/318 drag, I dont think anything went into Glasgow Works last Friday. The 334 are in Kilmarnock for 3 or 4 weeks normally so there is another few weeks till the next 334 drag.

I think the move is to now happen in the evening tomorrow. I think Springburn station would be a good place to get the moves.

70s are still considered to be too expensive. The new 66 order is not a guarantee yet either.

Yeah there is still a question mark over the 70s reliability. As for the deltic, it's no where near my area :cry:.
