Any news about XC yet? I hope Virgin wins again!

Yeah I posted about it on Friday ( 7th post above yours)

Here it is
Arriva Cross Country and NOT Virgin from November.

Class 220's in Arriva's house colours...eugh...
Possibility of them implementing the services from Weymouth and Poole as well.

460's are to go completely and the 442's are to be refurbed inside. The Snug is to go that will be luggage space, the First class compartments are to go as well and replaced with the standard seating. Not sure whether the units will be towed from Eastleigh or work their way from Eastleigh to Stewarts Lane.

The refurb is being paid for by the DfT apparently.

Hope you read this

VERY strong rumours that Arriva have won, expect an announcement next week for XC and East Coast (VT are favourites for that!)

Arriva has got the XC and Virgin has the Eastcoast.

Wow, the DfT must have it in for NEx...either that or their bids must've been really weak.

In defense to Arriva, it will still be same operational staff (for the trains) so diagrams may not even change, they only thing that should be taken note of is the seamless integration of the Citylink routes into the XC network.

Haven't NEG got Richard Bowker in charge of their railway division now? If he doesn't know what it takes to win a franchise.....

Then again, perhaps there are some sour grapes between DfT and Bowker.

so will the ECML have Virgin livery on?

I thought GNER had a stake in the new ECML bid.

I believe it will be East Midland Trains. Not mentioned here before, but Stagecoach have registered both eastmidlandtrains.co.uk and eastmidlandtrains.com

I was talking to several Retail Services Managers onboard VXC today and none of them knew who had got ther franchise but they all wanted vt (mainly because of the perks they get).

From todays times;

Stagecoach gave notice yesterday that it planned to follow its 20 per cent increase on its South West Trains franchise last month with a substantial increase on the new East Midlands franchise after it takes over in November.

The company plans to raise fares by at least 30 per cent above inflation during the seven-year franchise and indicated that it preferred one big increase early in the contract rather than spreading it over several years.

Great, but then I don't see it would have been that different whoever had got it. I do wonder though now most franchises are paying a premium where the money is going. It's either being taken by the DfT, or being pumped into a few loss making franchises (probably the Southern 3, since the uneven loadings make them inefficient, due to the need to maintain stock levels that are only worthwhile for a few hours a day, 5 days a week).

Indeed Govia are increasing fares at 25% plus inflation on London Midland over the life of the franchise.
I think you are a bit adrift in your calculations of the biggest loss making franchises, the heaviest subsidy per passenger mile are;
1) Merseyrail
2) Northern
3) First Scotrail

Whilst the souths 3 franchises traditionally had really imbalanced loads this has changed because of road congestion in the south east. Southern had passenger growth of 9.8% last year. I recently had to stand as far as Shoreham by Sea on the 23.07 departure from Victoria (thats 1 hr 20 mins) out of London. I dont mind too much since I get a 34% discount on my HM Forces Railcard but it shows how crowded the Southern Franchises are even off peak.

The Midland Mainline franchise is being combined with the eastern part of the Central franchise to create the new East Midlands franchise. The western part of Central is combining with the London Lines franchise (Silverlink), and the Citylink part is combining with Cross Country (other than Liverpool to Norwich and Birmingham to Liverpool, which are EM and WM respectivly). It's all part of the stratergy to cut down on the number of TOCs. Even if National Express had got East Midlands it wouldn't have been MML as we know it today, and it's unlikely they would have used the name either since it wouldn't be apropriate for a lot of the network (things like Liverpool to Norwich and Nottingham to Skegness don't exactly fit Midland Mainline).
