I recently looked up the cost of a new season ticket on NRE.

There was a link on this page to find out about valid routes:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/48293.aspx

NRE said:
The ticket that you have selected may require you to travel via a specific route. Our Journey Planner will have already taken this into account with the selection that you have made and will only have shown tickets that are valid for the selected trains. If you wish to travel via a specific route you can use the advanced options on the Journey Planner to select ‘travel via', ‘avoid', ‘include interchange' or ‘exclude interchange' so that the route and the required ticket(s) will be recalculated for you.

All tickets are valid via any reasonable route unless specifically stated on the ticket.

Not a word about the Routeing guide - and a statement that they're valid via "Any Reasonable route".

Do you think someone could rely on that information if they use a "resonable" but non-permitted route?

Its hard to imagine something that is 'reasonable' and doesn't conform to any of direct/mapped/shortest/less than 3 miles of shortest, but I'm sure someone will tell me there are many such examples.

Of course there are.

For instance Farnborough North - East Croydon via Guildford and Redhill.

Correct! Ditto Blackwater - East Croydon, and quite a few other stations round that way.

Using the quickest route isn't always permitted - see this thread for an example.

Yet I'd that if the rules have changed to say you're were allowed to travel by any 'reasonable' route, this would be perfectly fine (as in most people's eyes, the quickest route would be 'reasonable')

Interesting. Problem is that it would all come down to a subjective judgement of what is and what is not reasonable.
