Hello, just got caught out by the engineering works between London Bridge and Charing Cross today and ended up getting the train via Cannon Street.

Of the top of my head, I couldn't remember if there is an OSI in place at the station to any of the nearby LU stations (since Cannon Street Tube is closed), I asked a member of staff, but he didn't know and said I would be charged 2 seperate journeys. I quickly walked to the Monument entrance and tapped in. Sure enough, on exit at Embankment, I was charged a seperate journey.

Last time I had to go through Cannon St, I went through the Bank entrance and I recall that in the end, I was charged the normal rate for TfL/NR travel and not for 2 different journeys. Mind you, I hated the underground walk between the stations.

So I'm just wondering if anyone knows what interchanges are available from Cannon Street (if any)?

Thanks :)

From Cannon Street railway station there're OSIs with Cannon Street tube station (obviously), Bank and Mansion House. (Source.)

Edit: beaten to it!

Which entrance to Cannon Street do you think is the "Bank entrance"?

I've been in the same position a couple of times, and done the same thing - gone to Monument and been charged for two journeys. The easiest thing to do is to go to Mansion House. This has the added benefit of being one stop closer to Embankment. :)

By Bank entrance, I meant the entrance that is to the north of the station - the LU entrance, the Monument entrance is to the East of Cannon Street station.

It'll be on MikeWh's site:

Extract:

Cannon Street NR Bank LU
Cannon Street NR Cannon Street LU
Cannon Street NR Mansion House LU

All allow 20 mins

I'll probably head to Mansion House next time. Checked my Oyster history and found I had been charged two journeys, and I had made the interchange in 15 mins. Will chase it up as soon as. Could it have happened because the station isn't usually open on Sundays?

Cannon Street OSIs are strange. Ordinarily they would only exist between NR and LU. Bank was added to the NR station because it is literally a stones throw away, but if you're on the Underground you're expected to change at Monument. Mansion House was added for Saturdays when the NR station is open and LU shut. I think it's slighty nearer to Cannon Street than Monument. All permanent OSIs operate all the time, even when they're pointless.

I probably have my stupid hat on here, but I'm still not getting you. Cannon Street NR has two entrances, both facing north onto Cannon Street. One is by the booking office and the other is by M&S. Cannon Street LU has one entrance, facing west onto the hill.

Are you referring to the entrance to Bank station which is next to the City of London courthouse?

I was talking about the NR Cannon Street entrance, as both face north. The Bank entrance I was referring to is near the Magistrates Court, at the junction of Poultry, Lombard Street etc. . As I wasnt familiar with the area, but had done a couple of shifts on Cheapside, that was the only station entrance I knew how to get to at the time. As it was Sunday, Cannon Street LU was closed.

The Monument entrance I refered to is on the corner of Cannon Street and King William Street.

I have complained many times to Southeastern about Cannon Street station being open on Saturdays (engineering works excepted) but the tube station not open. The vast majority of people travelling on a Saturday want to go to Charing Cross, not Cannon St. Perhaps the new layout planned will enable more trains to terminate at Charing X.

I doubt it, there will still only be two tracks between London Bridge and Waterloo East and only 6 platforms at Charing Cross. Better to complain to TfL and get the Underground station opened on a Saturday.

Up to Southeastern to manage rather than TfL - they should be liasing with TfL to get the Underground open as required as part of ticket acceptance (I presume they provide that to Embankment?) They might have to pay something though which is where go-via likely have an issue with doing anything...

How is the Underground required as part of ticket acceptance? Where Charing Cross is closed then the Underground is open to provide alternative travel to Embankment. Saturday is a standard opening day for Southeastern and TfL have decided not to open at the same time. Oyster users can make through journeys via both Bank and Mansion House, but not at Cannon Street itself. If enough people convince TfL that it is worth opening Cannon Street Underground then it would be their decision to do so. I certainly wouldn't expect Southeastern to have to pay TfL on a normal day.

If Charing X is closed then Southeastern should be providing arrangements for passengers to get there at no extra cost to the passenger. TfL would probably charge to open the station on SE's requirement unless there is an agreement that neither will charge because it is all swings and roundabouts on acceptance in the end, but station opening costs will be higher than just ticket acceptance (ie c2c and Tfl for the District)

You seem to be missing the point here.

This thread is talking about the regular trains on Saturday that go into Cannon Street because there is not enough capacity into and at Charing Cross to provide the frequency of trains that Southeastern run off-peak Monday to Saturday. It is a normal service. Unlike Mondays to Fridays, TfL decided not to open the Underground station when Southeastern (probably Connex then) started running regular services on a Saturday.

When Charing Cross is closed on a Sunday (or Saturday/BH if appropriate) then Southeastern do liaise with TfL to provide alternative services. On a normal Saturday passengers simply change at London Bridge onto a train that is going to Charing Cross.

This of course might all change in the coming months/years when the rebuild programme at London Bridge requires all Charing Cross (and later all Cannon Street) trains to pass through without stopping. Perhaps TfL will be paid to open the Underground on Saturday during that time, and maybe, if it proves worthwhile they will keep it open afterwards.

Cannon Street LU is normally open on Saturdays until about 1930. The only reason it is not open at the moment is because of refurbishment work - once this is complete the opening hours will return to normal.

The problem I had took place on Sunday morning. There wasnt any alternative routes in place - not even the shuttle running from Cannon Street to Charing Cross.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Managed to get a part refund from TfL for the journey. Although I asked them directly whether there was an interchange between the two, they didn't answer that.
