This is a complete guess but maybe they are removing some of the material which has slipped onto the tracks by rail?

There is currently a working that runs round/reverses there. It goes to Applehurst Junction with material for the "Doncaster North Chord" aka the flyover they're starting to build at Joan Croft. Look up Applehurst Junction (Jn?) in real time trains or similar.

Does anyone know what it was doing and is it a regular working?
The train you saw is a regular working, conveying stone from Tunstead
to Applehurst Junction (Thorpe Marsh), for use in the construction of the
new flyover at Shaftholme Junction.
