Minffordd - Streatham Hill Off-Peak Return

Hello,

I have the return portion of this ticket to use - just want to check what I'm planning is valid. It has restriction VJ which means:

RETURN TRAVEL:
You may travel on any train
that is scheduled to DEPART:

London Euston: Before 0430 and
at or after 0905

London Marylebone: Before 0430
and at or after 0905

London Paddington: Between
0810 and 1640, or after 1801

Milton Keynes Central: Before
0430 and at or after 0900


Reading: Between 0835 and 1710
, or after 1831

Watford Junction: Before 0430
and at or after 0900

Thereford is it OK to do (on a Monday-Friday):

0720 Streatham Hill - Clapham Junction
0739 Clapham Junction - Milton Keynes
0913 Milton Keynes - Birmingham New Street
1023 Birmingham New Street - Welshpool (where I want to break my journey which I pretty sure is allowed).

The Southern service leaves Watford Junction at 0820 so you may not use that train.

In addition, the VT to Birmingham left Euston at 0843 so that's another breach of the time restrictions of the ticket.

The 0913 Milton Keynes to Birmingham train departs from Euston at 0843, so fails the departs Euston after 0905 rule.

I understand that the time restrictions apply to the train and not to the station you board at, for this code.

If you don't mind making some very tight connexions you could do:
0815 Paddington-Reading a. 0839 (sit in coach A or B at the front; the XC service usually departs from platform 3 which is adjacent on arrival at Reading).
0841 Reading-Birmingham NS a. 1018
1023 Birmingham-Welshpool

Risky for sure - the 0815 is the first to be cancelled if there's any problems, and it often arrives a minute or two late. Also if this is after Easter then the platforms will be different. New Street too is always fun in a rush.

There are no restrictions on departures from Waterloo, but unfortunately the direct line Waterloo-Reading isn't a Permitted Route (although via Woking and Ash Vale is, as is a ridiculous route via Westbury, Newport, Cheltenham, and Didcot...).

BoJ is of course valid on the return portion; it is barred on the outbound.

It will be after Easter so I think the Reading plan probably won't be possible.

Revised plan is:

Streatham Hill - Balham
0827 Balham - Milton Keynes
1013 Milton Keynes - Birmingham International
1108 Birmingham International - Shrewsbury
1327 Shrewsbury - Welshpool

Out of interest, would it be possible to use this ticket to go Birmingham - Hereford - Shrewsbury?

No. The site http://trainscanbecheaper.info can also help you work out whether a route is permitted. Put in the origin and destination plus enough via points to force the route (in this case use something like MKC and HFD as your via points, but feel free to experiment).

Then click "Is the route I want to take permitted" and it will tell you.

If you doubt the results, you should probably ask here for confirmation, or do a full routeing guide check yourself.
