Doesn't seem like Northern can make up their mind on what to run on the express services on this line - typically used to be a two car 158, in recent months there have been some 150's and a 150+153 combo running on a regular basis, then today, I'm on a 4 car 150.

Is such varied use of rolling stock common elsewhere, is it part of an ongoing trickle of units to Northern, is it bad planning back at the depots or are Northern trying to provide the right sized units for services ? I'd like to think the latter, thoughts ?

I was under the impression that these services (or at least the Nottinghams) were the only NL-diagrams timed for 90mph stock, though it's no surprise that a 75mph Sprinter could keep time on the semi-fasts between Leeds and Sheffield at least.

Even on the fastest stretches, I've only registered 65mph max on my iPhone GPS app - roll on building that direct line !

Edit - strike that, just passing Woodlesford and appear to be going 76mph ! Woohoo. !

The Hallam line does have quite a lot of variety. Even the pacers used seem quite variable, although my morning commute is fairly reliably a 3 car one. About the only Northern Rail diesel I've not seen on it is a 156.

A couple of weeks back i travelled on the 0905 Leeds to Nottingham service as far as Sheffield and that was 150114. Its not uncommon for class 150, 153 or 155 to turn up on the Leeds to Nottingham services, but if a class 155 is being used it has to be a Leeds crew throughout as Sheffield crews dont sign class 155s.

My local station is Woodlesford and anything can turn up on any service regardless of what its booked for, for instance i reguarly travel on the 2105 Leeds to Knottingley service and the past few weeks and its been: class 142, 144, 150, 153, 155 & 158 so it goes to show anything goes.

A few years back now, maybe around 2010/11 I got a 156/153 combination which was excellent! No idea where it came from though..

Also a few years back didn't Northern do stock movements through the Manchester Piccadilly stopper then going on to the Hallam Line stopper, I'm sure a 156 managed to do that too..

Ah, well I have seen 156's on the Hope Valley, so even though I've never seen it that does seem perfectly plausible.
