I cannot see any restriction to a BoJ at Watford which suggests to me that the ticket is valid for starting short at Watford. Is that correct?

Do you mean the Off-Peak Day Single? If so, you can of course start short.

The first off-peak Virgin Trains departure from Watford Junction to Milton Keynes on a weekday is at 2158. There are a few early trains on a Saturday. If there was a dedicated Virgin Trains fare from Watford, customers would soon query the lack of a service to use it on.

The Virgin Trains Only off peak day single (CDS) from Euston to MKC is indeed cheaper than the equivalent fare routed Any Permitted from Watford to MKC.

You're right that Virgin would not be permitted to introduce Virgin Trains Only tickets from Euston to Watford, as Virgin Trains do not operate any trains from Euston that are advertised to call at Watford.

There is nothing to stop Virgin introducing Virgin Trains Only tickets from Watford to MKC, though this us understandable due to the lack of trains. On a typical weekday there are only 4 services: two very early in the morning, and two very late at night, with no service for most of the day.

That is not a fact at all!

Indeed, it is wrong. I believe he meant to say Virgin would not be able to introduce their own Virgin Trains Only routed tickets on that particular flow.

Eventually realised that I was attempting to save £2.30 less 34% NSE discount which is not really worthwhile.

I thought that Virgin was not in a position to sell Euston/Watford tickets for use on their own trains (other than as a component of longer journeys). Isn't that right?

Sorry, can you clarify what you mean by a "Euston/Watford ticket"?

Virgin is not allowed to carry passengers between London Euston and Watford Junction only. It can sell a ticket between those points without hindrance, and indeed must do so if a passenger asks for one at a booking office it runs, such as the one at Euston.
