I have seen (from a distance) coal trains on this route recently, but not sure if they're a regular feature.

Anybody know?

If you go to the General Discussion board you will find a lot of information under the thread "Marches Freight Shrewsbuy to Newport" which by and large covers some of the traffic between Shrewsbury and Crewe. The most recent post was on 7th March. This may be of help to you although much of the northbound freight when it reaches Shrewsbury takes the Chester rout or goes via Abbey Foregate Curve to the West Midlands.

These are mainly coal traffic, that are amongst the various freights on the section through Shrewsbury.
