EMT have sent me a confusing email???

I really don't understand this email.

'Thank you for your application for the above position.

I regret to inform you that since we advertised for this role the vacancy has been put on hold. However if this decision changes we will write or email to confirm an interview for the above position.

I apologise for any disappointment this may cause and can re-assure you that your details will be held on file in regard to this position.'

Wait, so Have they basically made me waste my time applying for a job that wasn't there or a job which was filled internally??? What does that mean???

I'm ok at the moment as I do have a job but considering I went to the effort of doing the forms in my best handwriting and doing three drafts and checks before the final version and sent it by special next day delivery to make sure it got there, I feel somewhat a tad annoyed that I haven't really got a response I understand??

To most of you, you will probably understand it but its jut the way my brain is wired (ASD) that means I don't quite fully get it. There isn't even an explanation as to why this has happened, which I kind of expect??

I'll just have to wait and see....

What it seems to mean is that between the time they put the advert out, and now, something has changed, and they are not now in a position to fill this vacancy.

They would not have advertised this job just for the fun of wasting peoples' time (and theirs in dealing with applications)

This sort of situation is not unknown, not all employers would even bother to communicate as much as this.

could be that something has brought about a change in their likely requirements (without knowing what and where the job is, it's hard to speculate what sort of change this might be)

could be financial - they have decided against having that job at all

could be something like they have identified an existing employee whose post is being made redundant, and that s/he has priority in being redeployed to this job

could even possibly be something like someone has successfully appealed against being dismissed.

This would be the most likely cause of a vacancy being on hold in my organisation. there are constant staffing and financial reviews going on, which can occasionally lead to posts already advertised no longer being deemed necessary, at least on the terms or grading stated in the advert.

In this case the vacancy may be on hold whilst it is determined whether or not it will be necessary to fill the post, or whether the vacancy details need to be altered in some way.

This is also a strong possibility based on what happens where I work. The post would be on hold during atrial period to determine whether the redployee was suitable or not. If they are, the vacancy would be withdrawn, if not the recruitment process would recommence.

Much less likely in my view, although it could also be a knock on effect from something like a planned secondment or promotion not being taken up, or being delayed due to operational requirements.

The main thing to emphasise is that this is not confined to the railway, and is not done deliberately to annoy applicants.

I have a background in HR and echo what Catford Cat, Greenback and your Mum say. I don't have the exact source to hand but was once told it costs the equivalent of 18 months' salary to advertise, recruit for and train a new employee into a role. I'm sure that the real costs on the railway are much higher. Putting a vacancy on hold is not something that will be taken lightly. At least it hasn't been withdrawn altogether!

Why not respond, thanking them for their email and saying that you very much look forward to hearing from them when they are in a position to recruit again? Yes, it'll take you a little more time and effort, but you may well stick out in their mind as someone who is serious about the role.

Never state/slate a company you might want to work for, they might be able to work you out, you posted on here your location and your user name could be your initials?, bit like the facebook thing with future employers checking people's lifestyles etc,

just a concern and keep trying that's all you can do.
