Does the Cardiff to Paignton and return working still see class 150/9 operation or is it mostly class 158s now. When i was staying in Teignmouth last July it was a class 158 for the whole two weeks i was down there.

Past month or so it's been solid 150/9 - everyday I've seen it which is most days. I think they try and put a 3 car 158 on it if hey have one spare, but the 158s are heavily in demand enough on the Pompey - Cardiffs, so it very rarely happens. :(

It's booked for a 150/9. They don't try to put a 158 on it, but if one of the 150/9s is unavailable the other diagram cannot be a 158/9 as it runs to Severn Beach and the platform at Avonmouth is too short at the moment for a 158/9. That means that is a 150/9 is unavailable it is the Paignton diagram that is replaced by a 158/9 if available.

Last week on Thursday it was a 150/2 and a 153. More often than not its a 150/9 though.

Fair enough - Thanks for correcting me!

I think that combo would preferable to a 150/9 in my view!

It's almost always either 150921 or 150927, however on Monday it was 158955. It arrives at Paignton at 1124 and then returns with the 1248 service, arriving back at Cardiff at 1618. I believe a 153 is attached to the service at some point for strengthening. It then works the 1700 to Taunton and then the 1910 Taunton to Bristol.

Could some kind person explain what a 150/9 is? I'm guessing its a 3 car 150 (like the ones that existed in Birmingham for many years) but would appreciate detail.

Yep, a 150/9 is a three car version utilising the surviving 57xxx cars from 150209/212 as centre cars. (The 52xxx cars fropm 209/212 were written off after accidents fairly early on in their lives).

They are numbered as /9s to differentiate the 3 coach units from the /1s and 2/s which are 2 coach units.

It also keeps all the 3 coach FGW units numbered as /9s (except 158798 but there is always 1), which helps keep diagramming simple.

But they are based at Reading so are not diagrammed with the other units.

I have heard that 150001 & 150002 could soon be heading west to St Phillips Marsh to work around the Bristol area. Seems they are not proving to be as reliable as hoped at Reading.

Ah thank you. I was wondering what might have happened to these two non-toilet cars after the birmingham area formations were disbanded.

I've had 3 car 158798 one late night up to Beach and back, did it for the novelty on a rover, this was when it was still in TPX livery. Didn't seem to have any trouble at Avonmouth as having been there myself I know it's a bit more than just 2 cars length.
The Western Quail reckons you can fit 4 cars to Severn Beach (sound's about right) and 3 cars on the other platform coming back.

It's a recent problem, the platform at Avonmouth has been temporarily shortened for some reason. I imagine it is just a case of some fencing being put up in the wrong place which means a 3-car 158 doesn't quite fit at the moment.

Is that 4 20metre coaches or 4 23 metre coaches?

The coach length makes a big difference to the number of coaches that can be accommodated.
