1F99 Leicester to Sheffield

Anyone any idea why the 1F99 is running this Saturday only and from Leicester,is it a special for a football match as it seems to go the back route round Toton and Beighton?

Sheffield Wednesday are playing at Leicester City on Saturday at 1500 so they would correlate...

Though its not far to walk from the ground to the station, departing 45 mins after the final whistle is a bit optimistic.

That's a shame! Would've made a nice trip on HST past Toton and round the 'old road'

It's just over a mile IIRC, which would be roughly 20-25 minutes allowing for crossing roads etc in normal circumstances. But of course with mass numbers that soon becomes a lot longer. You've also then got to factor in the finish time (no league match ever finishes at 1645, it's normally closer to 1650 or even 1655), getting them out of the ground and then getting them to the station. Can't see it going to plan in all honesty.

Aye exactly its quite a direct route up Wellington way or whatever they call it nowadays but with a throug of people on only 2 paths either side it just becomes slow. I guess it'll be waiting a while

I think that the Wednesday players used the train to go down to Crystal Palace a couple of years ago, so they seem a fairly "pro rail" team

That's an incredibly rare bit of route to travel, the High Level Goods at Trent!

Really? MML diversions via Toton regularly use this bit iirc, especially in the southbound direction. Unless you count the two tracks separately.

It is (or was) quite rare for them to go over the (former?) High Level Goods lines (not sure if/how they were redesignated following the Trent resignalling?), which restricts them to the slow lines as far as Loughborough North. Gaining the Erewash Valley line at Trent East Jn is, I think, the more common move.

Just seen the service pass Beighton level crossing. There was only 10 - 20 people on the whole HST. It left Leicester nearly 20 late too so it's hardly unlikely people missed it.

In my youthful days of watching 'overpaid primadonna' footy the fun we used to have trying to explain to station staff / BTP that my mate and I didn't want to be on the Footex from Leicester as we were heading back to Grantham.

Our regular move was catch a Brum - Norwich service with a 31 & MK1s to Peterborough.

That's a real shame - given the cost of organising a service like this (decent result for those who made the journey, of course)

My initial thought was passengers may have caught earlier services. I know this happened when Sheffield United were at Wembley and ended up on the 1955 Sheffield service instead of the 2100 Special Football service, which was a 'fun' couple of hours on the rammed HST.
Can't imagine passengers would've been much earlier though.
