Ok, so slightly off-beat for this forum, but, it's a job, on the railway, albeit preserved.

Came across this recently, and on the face of it, sounds like the ultiamte dream job - full time working rostering steam locos and the like, train planning etc, as well as day to day running of the line.

Has anyone else gone for this? I'm slightly sceptic of my chances, due to my lack of experience in actually planning trains (but am I am an administrator by trade) and I'm hoping just loving steam engines would carry me through.

Would be good to hear from anyone else who's applied to this, or is involved with that railway already.

Thanks,
Keiran.

Note to admins - if you feel this is better placed under Preservation, by all means move me:D

The WSR is a "heritage railway" for sure but it does see regular trains on/off the mainline - one comes in and out on most weekdays - so lots of working with NR. Attention to detail, good organisational skills & especially railway working knowledge are likely to be very important but love of steam locos not that relevant, IMHO. Just a personal view.

I'd like to think I have those things - my current day job requires me it, just not the working railway knowledge - I havn't had that in a job, but I'd say I know enough to get in through the door.

What sort of trains are coming on/off from NR? P-way? Guest? ECS etc?

Regular ones are HOBCs (well half a HOBC) which dump spent ballast at the Norton Triangle. Other stuff comes in from time to time - steamers for servicing/turning; rail trains; some PW; a few excursions to Minehead. Not a lot but enough to keep the rails shiny. Have a look at the pics on www.wsr.org.uk for an overview of what goes on. Try the "galleries page" for an index of topics or use the search.
