Mersey area dayticket

Hi, Im looking for a child ticket that lets me go on trains anywhere in the Merseytravel area, and on every TOC. Is there such a ticket? If so, what price am I looking at? Thanks, Archie.

You need a Merseytravel Saveaway. There is a map of where it's valid in this PDF (page 5).

All areas is £2.50 at the child rate.

From what I can gather, the Saveaway is valid on Merseyrail only - and a Solo, Trio or Railpass would be needed to use other TOCs (info). Since they aren't available as a day ticket, only weekly or longer, I'm not sure a single ranger-style ticket would be the most economical option

Solo (Bus only), Railpass (All rail in Merseyside) and Trio (Bus, Rail and Ferry) are season tickets. Saveaway is a day version of the Trio, and is valid on all TOCs in Merseyside.

Yes, the saveaway is definitely valid on all TOCs. Although you might have some trouble using it on Virgin *

A couple of options:

1) £2.35 Merseyrail Day Saver aka "ME Day Saver" for "Northwirrallines". This allows you to travel on the Northern and Wirral Lines using Merseyrail only.

2) £2.50 Merseytravel Saveaway "All Areas". This allows travel on the City Line, (as far as Newton-le-Willows, Garswood or Hough Green) Northern Line, (Southport/Ormskirk/Kirkby/Hunts Cross) and Wirral Lines, (Chester/Ellesmere Port/West Kirby/New Brighton). It also allows travel on all local buses within Merseyside and on the Mersey Ferries, (but only for 1 stop at a time, not the longer cruises for tourists).

Both are not valid for use between 0630 and 0930 Monday to Friday. Valid all day at the weekend.

Not really your fault. The Merseytravel leaflet is contradictory in itself.

In the section "Traveling by Saveaway", the only validity on rail services is with "Merseyrail trains". There is no mention of other operators, and last time I checked, London Midland are definitely not part of Merseyrail.

Then in "Conditions of use", these TOCs are not contained in the exclusions list.

I think Merseytravel need to get their own facts correct before distributing leaflets that are confusing to say the least.

The City Line services, provided by London Midland, Transpennine Express, East Midlands Trains and Northern are branded locally as "Merseyrail", hence where the confusion comes from.

So Merseyrail is both a TOC, and an area in which that TOC and other TOCs operate trains? How ambiguous, and stupid. I note that even Virgin's logo is featured. That'd require a 19(c) split to utilise the validity?

If you look at the Wikipedia article on "Merseyrail", it is apparant that people have different intpretations of what "Merseyrail" is.

The Wikipedia article sees Merseyrail as one "entity", i.e. a train company and a brand of trains within a geographical area.

Legally, Merseyrail Electrics 2002 Ltd is the "TOC" operating rail services, on behalf of Merseytravel on the Northern and Wirral Lines, and "Merseyrail" is a brand name owned by Merseytravel, but licensed to ME 2002 Ltd and other train operating companies.

I agree that is a very confusing situation! Would have been better for the TOC to have called itself Abellio Rail Services Merseyside etc.

Possibly similar to n-network though?

Merseyrail the concept predates not only the TOC but also the 1974 MPTE county boundary adoption of the 'brand'.

It would have been if the rail franchise description had differed a bit more from old BR and PTE Merseyrail. Might have been better for them to have shortened it to Mersey Electrics maybe.

As Virgin only operates from Lime St to Runcorn and Runcorn is not in the Saveaway area how could the ticket be valid on a Virgin train?

With a season ticket from, say Liverpool SP to Stafford,
