I've got a job in Southampton on Friday and am just trying to assess the best way to go from London.

The optimum question though is - will the trains have power points?

If by that you mean power points are essential, I'd say FGW (HST or 180) Paddington to Reading, and XC Reading to Southampton.

Between the parallel lines
Electrical sockets (BS1363, etc. ;)) are available in the First Class accommodation of most (but not all, as far as I know) Southern 377s on London Victoria - Southampton Central/Bognor Regis services.

Please note that the power sockets in the vestibules of 377s are not for passenger use as the supply is not in accordance with the standards required for the safe use of most electronic devices.

Cheers for that, although going West to go South adds a bit too much to the journey time wise.

SWT's class 444's should have sockets in First I believe. Surely your most important consideration is the cost and convenience of your commute though?! It's not that long a journey after all!

Yeah but still got a bit of work to do, so literally any time I'm sat (hopefully) I'll need to be able to get my laptop set up.

SWT 444s also have power points at the tables in the DMSO (the standard class end car that is normally at the country end on leaving Waterloo). As the OP is heading in the contra-flow direction I'd have thought he should be OK getting a table and power on a 444.

That's quite interesting, didn't know that!

Cheers. Turns out I'm not going to Southampton at all, but nearby to Winchester.

Yeah, still 444s. I've never actually made the entire journey to Waterloo from Southampton (or Winchester), but I've been up to Basingstoke and I've also been from Basingstoke to London separately and it's not a bad journey. The only complaints I have are that the seats on the 444s are a little hard for my taste and that the tunnels between Basingstoke and Winchester really hit you as far as ear-popping goes ;) - it doesn't seem to rack up too much delay compared to some lines.

xx05 and xx35 departures off Waterloo will be 444s, so if you get there in plenty of time you should be able to get a table (and socket) in the DMSO.

xx09 and xx39 departures off Waterloo are semi-fast to Winchester, and are a mix of 444 and 450 stock.
