Seen a cheap ticket for €13.80 single Wien Hausfeldstrabe to Budapest via Bratislava (it says it is flexible with no reservation needed)

1: Can this be bought at the station?
2: Does it allow a break of journey at Bratislava for a couple of hours?

This is described as "Standardpreis International, fully flexible" so yes, you can break your journey (you could do a test-booking with a 2-hour stop and print the itinerary).

It says you can't book online so you can only buy at a station.

I must say I would be surprised if that fare included the EC supplement - might be worth checking.

However someone else will have to answer about Hausfeldstrasse as it's 40 years since I was last in Vienna.

I'd be surprised if no reservation is required, unless you can take a non-IC train, as the railways in Hungary now require reservations on all cross border IC services - at least that's what I understand from recent journeys. Here's a (clearly not authoritative) online source:

Got an email this morning from OBB saying €13.80 fare doesn't exist so sent print screen of OBB Scotty showing it.

EC trains from Bratislava to Budapest have mandatory reservations

Last October, I took a day trip from Budapest to Nove Zamky in Slovakia on the Bratislava route using EC trains both ways. Reservations were not required for this journey and I was able to purchase tickets shortly before departure. I travelled out on the 09:25 Berlin train and back on one that had started in Ostrava.

Looking at this journey on the MAV-Start website, the 09:25 train says:

R "Seat Reservation in international traffic can be made"

I remember the ticket was very cheap - the fare is currently the Hungarian equivilant of €10.50 return for an international journey of nearly 80 miles each way!

And if you want to save money on supplies whilst en-route, there is a massive Tesco on the Komarom side of the river adjacent to the bridge.

Google recommends a 36 min walk between the two stations. I have got a 40 min connection, will this be achievable?

I didn't time it when I was there, as we had a couple of hours in the area and didn't visit the station at Komarom.

However, based on the Google result, a 40 minute connection sounds very risky - it doesn't allow anything for train delays or making a wrong turn during the walk.

Be warned that crossing the big junction on Route 63 (Medercska) could take a while - it did when we were returning to Komarno station.
