i think the Q1 would be perfect for heritage railways to be honest and id like to see it about.

The Q1 definitely, outshopped as 33001. The Midland compound is a good suggestion too.

I wonder how many locos could have been completed for the cost spent on that A3?

Also, make sure that they include the 2-BIL unit in the formation of Southern slammers.

87001 was driven to York and parked up in the condition it arrived. Aside from the usual suspects OTMR and GSM-R (and soon ERTMS) it needs wheelsets. It also has a leaky transformer. I cannot see it ever making a comeback.

Probably very little chance.

The NRM has a difficult balancing act between conserving items in their original form and "entertaining" the public with train rides, etc. As ELTIC> is a pretty unique object, and presumably retains the original ancillary equipment (batteries, drivers seat, lightbulbs, etc, etc) from 1955, the NRM would probably be reluctant to allow any modifications to get it running again.

I remember reading a good while ago that 4003 Lode Star retains GWR (as opposed to BR Western Region) paint,which is apparently fairly unique also - so is also unlikely to be allowed out to play...

Another vote here for the Q1, its a relatively simple engine and very usefull, unique, and should'nt cost the earth to restore due to its simple nature.

That said i do wonder if it would be better putting it on loan to say the Mid-Hants railway on a restore and use policy just like 925 'Cheltenham', the Q1 would fit in there well and the MHR are quite experianced with Bullied engines.

Surprised no one has sugested 'Duchess of Hamilton'.

As for diesels, how about 58050? Although i do like the sugestions of doing an EMU.

But the only thing that would be wrong with the EMU is that if they were to restore it to its former glory, they would have to mainline fit it and would only be used down south, and i cant see them restoring it so it can be dragged around by diesels. Dont get the same experience.
