W/E first upgrades are valid on any service of the TOC you buy the upgrade on - for example, on leaving Haymarket station in Edinburgh on a Sunday, I boarded a Voyager to Manchester Piccadilly, intending to change at Carlisle for Wolverhampton. The result is that the upgrade ticket they give you on payment says where you want to use it to/from, in my case, despite being on a Livingston North to Wolverhampton ticket, Haymarket to Wolverhampton. In the route section on the ticket, it says 'VIRGIN XC ONLY'. The upshot of which I could use it on any Virgin XC service that took me to my destination. I believe 'VIRGIN WC ONLY' also exists.

Hail All! <D

That's a handy thing to know! :)

...However if the Stupid Rail Authority hadn't split Virgin into two bits, it would have allowed a traveller to buy a W/E1 upgrade from Glasgow to either Euston or Penzance (Or wherever you'd change from West Coast to Cross Country and vice-versa) and not have to buy another because they're effectively changing to another TOC's service!

Isn't it interesting how the people who made up the "Strategic" Rail Authority always travelled around by car and avoided trains like the plague? <(

...I believe 'VIRGIN WC ONLY' also exists.
...Meaning that you can sit in the First Class carriage, but only if you're occupying the lavatory at the time!:p

Farewell... <D

Hmm - could an inspector hand out a PF to somebody who was standing in a first class vestibule though? If it was impossible for them to stand in the second class area...

As for the first class thing, was once traveling on FGW, and decided to upgrade to First Class as it was relatively cheap (booking in advance and all). However, some fool put an Adalante instead of a HST on, resulting in one packed train... however, the difference between first and second class tickets was (eventually) refunded.
