It's mostly driven, as far as I'm aware, by the requirements of crashworthiness standards.

So there will come a day when all train seating is uncomfortable? Even modern first class seating can be rock hard. It's a shame some sort of happy medium can't be reached with regards to comfort AND crash worthiness.

Still you do get people who seem to prefer the rock hard seating of modern trains. Maybe they sleep on a bed of bricks at night.

Funnily enough, it's almost impossible to get a bed with springs any more...

It's the shaping (and thus support) of the seat and the legroom that bother me more than the amount of padding in the cushion. I'd much rather have a numb backside after 2 hours than back and leg ache after 20 minutes!

Not all first class seating can be bad - SWTs First Class seats in the 158/159 fleet are rock hard, but those in FGWs HST & Class 180 refurb are quite nice and comfortable.

Don't forget the buzz word in seating design too -'Ergonomics'. Everything these days has to be ergonomically designed, which unfortunatly also mean the seats dictate how you sit, especially in the the Voyagers & Bombardier Electrostars & 172s.

Various places in Roaring Meg in Stevenage (please don't ask me to remember what they are called). They may not actually be planks, but they seem to be plank-hard and all have very hard mattresses.

Best seating I have found to sit in on a train is the Northern Rail 158s. Very comfortable, compared to FGW HST's and XC seating (including First class)
