Northampton to London Euston in First Class on LM and Virgin services

I currently catch the 07:13 (London Midland service) from Northampton to London Euston and I'm considering upgrading my season ticket to First Class for a virtually guaranteed seat and a bit more comfort on my commute to/from work. Due to the very poor First Class offering on LM, I would probably choose to catch the 06:42 Virgin service in the mornings, as the Virgin First Class service offers 'free' tea/coffee and hot rolls, etc (and better comfort). Wouldn't get the full cooked breakfast, unfortunately, as this is apparently only made available to passengers boarding the train at Rugby, where the service originates.

I used to catch the 06:42 Virgin service (in standard class) and it was always absolutely rammed and, 50% of the time, I'd end-up standing all the way to Euston. This is why I switched to the 07:13 LM service, which used to originate at Northampton and now originates at Rugby, but since it's a 12-car train, you can always get a seat in standard class.

What always struck me as very irritating as a passenger is that Virgin randomly provide either a 9-car Pendolino or a 5-car Super Voyager for this service and there's absolutely no way of knowing, ahead of time, what will come rolling down the track. Standard class seat availability on the 9-car Pendolino was always fine, with a few spare seats usually still available. However, on the 5-car Super Voyager with virtually half the capacity for the same amount of passengers, the seating situation is appalling.

So, here's the question... can anyone comment on seat availability on the Virgin 06:42 service from Northampton in First Class? Are there always seats available, or is it still very busy, even in First Class?

Also, any general comments on First Class travel on London Midland and Virgin in general would be appreciated, as it's a lot of extra money (~£2,700 PA) for a First Class annual season ticket.

Really not worth it on London Midland if you can usually get a seat in Standard. You could consider doing seat reservations for the Virgin service (no problem if you miss it you can always get the LM one after).

Can you do seat reservations for a daily peak service under the context of a season ticket??

If the train is reservable, which the VT one is sure to be, then yes.

Note that TransPennine Express have a policy of not allowing season ticket holders to get seat reservations (from the clerks at the stations it operates). Though I am not aware of any such policies under the operators on the Southern WCML.

From the forebearance of observing the Virgin Trains Twitter feed I am of the understanding that the labourer slaving to keep exasperated Twitter followers at bay are indeed able to undertake seat reservations in the daytime.

It could be considered to ask them.

It is booked for a 5 car 221, so always expect relatively less capacity.

I haven't been on this train for a while, but from experience, First Class was always full with one or two people standing when it operates as a Voyager.

Personally, I would save your money and travel on the LM service as you'll always get a seat from Northampton at peak times. I've seen quite a few people move from the 06:42 to the 06:18 so they don't have to fight their way onto the train for a seat.

The VT service is always rammed and frankly the use of a voyager on it and the fact there's only one service are both shameful. I took the attached picture to try to show this, although it didn't come out very clearly. As others have said, try reserving, but the VT First Class fares almost certainly won't be worth it on such a short journey where they can't even be bothered to provide the full range of benefits. As you know there isn't even a VT service back at any time to make the added cost worthwhile (I'm not sure there is such a thing as a Virgin-only ticket from NMP? Might be worth checking for that, it could work out cheaper doing morning and evening separately if there is). Anyway yeah, stick with LM, I see no reason for you to spend more and get up earlier for the most insanely under-provided service in living memory.
