Best Value Day Travel Tickets

Just testing the water to see out of all the day rover, day tripper, travelcards out their, which one do you think gives you the best value for money, e.g price .v. area you can travel.

London Travelcard ( off peak ) zone 1-9 at £11.60 must be good value for the areas you can travel too

In the republic of Sheffield we have the South Yorkshire Day Tripper at £6.30.
This gives you unlimited travel for one day on all buses and trams in South Yorkshire.

It is also valid on some trains after 0930 on a weekday and all the time at weekends.

It depends on what your plan is. For example, if you only need to stay within Zones 1-6 then it is pretty much pointless having a Zones 1-9 Travelcard.

Using the ratio of price:area / coverage, without doing serious maths, I'd say that an Off-Peak Z1-6 Travelcard at £8.80 would be better than the 1-9 equivalent - that price can be reduced further with a railcard to £6.50~ IIRC. Merseyside has one whose name escapes me, which (last year) was £4.50 and was valid on (all?) buses, rail and ferries across Merseyside. SPT's Daytripper is £11~ for 1 adult and 2 children, and covers from Maybole to Ardlui and across to eastern reaches of Glasgow.

Southern have some good fares:

Epsom - London Southern Only Super-Off-Peak Day Travelcard, £4.95 with groupsave (cheaper than a 1-6 for a group)
Pevensey Bay - Bookham Off-Peak Day Return Not Via London £13

I was going to give an honourable mention to the off-peak DaySave ticket from Southern, although I notice the price is now £14 (last time I looked in to it, it was £10!).

It's going to be London. The density of public transport is not matched anywhere else within Great Britain.

Area is a pretty poor comparison (especially if you're not counting the bus) because empty space will make some tickets look more attractive than others. I know it's not a day ticket but as an example imagine the area the Freedom of Scotland rover gives

If you're looking to do local lines, then there are a whole bundle of PTE type tickets that give excellent value, in many cases at prices less than a standard return from one edge of the area to the other.
Best value in terms of different things to do/things to see has to be the 1-6 travelcard as others have mentioned, mostly micro-mileage though. The Strathclyde and Southern daytrippers are the best value in terms of doing a few miles. The Southern ticket was still £12 when I bought one last year and did 250 miles without trying too hard. Still good value at £14 though..

Won't be buying one of those!

The ferry validity is very limited - it is only valid on the morning and evening direct rush hour service Monday to Friday on one sailing from Liverpool to Seacombe at 4-50pm at the weekends.

Won't be buying one of those!

That's news to me. We've presented Saveaways at the ferry ticket counter in Liverpool at various times of day and never been told we can't use them at that time.

I am aware that you are not supposed to stay on the ferry for a round trip, but in practice no-one seems to enforce that.

I've used the Saveaway ticket no problem on the ordinary daytime River Explorer cruise, it's just only valid in one direction (I used it Pier Head to Woodside) - you have to show your ticket at the ferry booking office to get a boarding pass.

Crikes - bad news... this thread has revealed probably the biggest sudden increase in cost of a ranger style ticket:
ie Southern All Network Downlander - from £12.50 to £16.50 ie 32% increase!

What is the £44 day ranger?

It's the Newcastle-Carlisle-S&C-Leeds-York-Newcastle 'Round Robin' 1 day ticket.

They don't call it a day ranger, but it's in the same leaflet and it is a 1 day ticket.

Probably worthwhile doing so too.

Rovers/rangers and PTE tickets do change. Rovers not so much but the other 2 quite frequently. I know that at least one day ranger vanished this winter and a couple more have had their areas tweaked. There's a mention of it in another thread somewhere. The Central Scotland Rover has just changed its area too.
