Advertisements?

How come other than a few awful Ginters liveried 158's and a few Swiss 319's? do trains never receive any exterior/interior advertisements? Surely this could subsidise tickets etc?

South West Trains' 455s used to be quite a hotbed for various advertising liveries, including one for Legoland Windsor, South West Trains promotional livery, Queen's 2002 Golden Jubilee, Rememberance Sunday / Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal & 'Cotes du Rhone' Red Wine.

Whilst the biggest advertising fleet would have come from Wales & West / Wessex Trains, which brought us such colourful liveries as the Wessex Trains Class 143s (Visit Bristol), Wales & Borders / Valley Lines Red & Green Class 150 promotional liveries, Wessex Trains's various Visit SouthWest Class 150 promotional liveries, Wales & West / Wessex Trains 'Heart Of Wales' 'Heart Of Wessex' 'The Great Scenic Railways Of Devon & Cornwall' & 'St Ives Bay Belle' & 'Looe Valley Explorer' Class 153s.

Heathrow Express units have external advertising liveries, as did Gatwick Express units. Pendolino and Eurostar units have also carried promotional liveries. There have been others and there's been plenty.

I don't know if they still have them but Central (now LM) 323s used to have awful TVs inside blasting out ads.

I know that theres a few Northern units advertising certain lines, like the S+C, Darlo - Bishop Auckland etc.

Scotrail used to have a 170 advertising Glasgow' s Commonwealth Games bid. It was pretty colourful .

I liked the Legions Appeal and Golden Jubilee liveries on the box machines, the rest were just awful!

Along with the promotional liveries, Valley Lines had some on the 150s, one red coach and one green one, stuck out like a sore thumb!

NXEA had 156402 done for Chapelfield Shopping centre in Norwich although this has now been reliveried into GA (minus logos). There where plans to do more including Newmarket Racecourse but never materialised.

So did it, just a shame that during the Wales & West > Wales & Borders / Wessex Trains split, they all ended up in the W&B Fleet, advertising Ginsters all across Wales & Manchester rather than across the south west.

Close enough. The livery on 'The West Fleet' is known as Local Lines, which is a derivative of the Dynamic Lines livery. Same livery design, but it has been designed to incorporate a variety of local places across the South and South West, and can currently been seen across the Class 143, 150/2*, Class 153* & Class 158 Fleets.

*With the exception of 150202, 216 & 57209 / 57212 which currently form part of 150921 & 927 Respectively. All Class 153s are in Local Lines livery with the exception of as yet repainted but now FGW branded 153s 325 & 333 which are still in LM base livery.

London Underground have run C Stock in a Yellow Pages livery and the Central Line had a 92 stock in a special "Digital" livery last year with some rather fetching pink seats inside.

Thats right. The 3M 321 was one of the first wraps i remember. Then they did the NS livery, or was that before?

if they have privateised bus companies with adverts and wraps and internal adverts why cant rail? even if its just adverts for the ticket types they sell or add ons eg system one bus and train or plus bus tickets?

There's been at least one 378 wrapped in adverts for Boris Johnson's mates at Lyca Mobile (the company leant a call centre floor to his campaign. They get a plum advertising space. Coincidence? Anyone doubting it is is naive)

I am sure TOCs would glady put vinyl ads on their trains if companies wanted to pay. Perhaps some companies don't want to be associated with commuter trains generally, but see value on things like Heathrow Express or other 'premium' services.

Maybe TOCs are asking for too much money.. who knows? I certainly don't think there's any reason other than negotiating the right deal.

Very few buses around where I am use full wraps anymore.. The odd few have the back of the bus covered, but most just have the standard "poster" style adverts on the side.

ive seen more and more recently i suppose it depends where you live and the operator arriva and first have expanded more into this area especially in towns rather than cities and cumfybus have there own business that brands buses

The buses round here used to have legoland or John Nike adverts covering them, but these seem to have gone in favour of either plain First or route specific liveries.

First in Bristol tend to - Seemed a few months ago that every bus around was completely vinyl wrapped in advertising....

A lot of advertisers/agencies are now pumping money in online campaigns, and dabbling with things like Facebook. Online advertising can be monitored and social media seems to be the thing companies need to be seen to be doing, even if it's questionable as to whether having 4 trillion likes improves your sales....

I can therefore see bus or train advertising falling. You only need to go around the tube network to see that in the months of January and February, even the supposedly prime ad spots on platforms and the escalators are full of old ads that should have been replaced, but can't as there's nothing to replace them with (hence lots of posters for Christmas DVDs or events that have been and gone).

I stick to what I said; if a company approached a TOC and said 'we'd like to cover your train with ads' then they'd likely do it.

That's true, Finsbury Park still has many Christmas adverts whenever I go through it!
