Signalling went down yesterday between 14:30 and 16:00 wiping out control between Northallerton, Darlington up as far as Ferryhill/Tursdale.

Today (Sunday) Newcastle is at a stand with nothing moving and all ecs movements out of Heaton stuck. 08:00 EC and 08:05 TPE departures south cancelled with no word at this time when services will resume. How far the problem stretches again I don't know.Possible murmurings suggest one train an hour hand signalled, so expect that will be an EC service.

09:33 TPE may be formed of 6 cars using the set that should have left at 08:05 if train movements are restored by then.

Nothing further known at this time.

As of now [08:39], NationalRail is showing two cancellations at Newcastle - 1011 (from Leeds) 1018 (from Metrocentre) and one cancellation from (0910 to Carlisle)

GC just left empty stock to Sunderland so that's running. Trains can go north but nothing south. Problems in Birtley area, tho 09:00 KGX HST is loading so they must be planning to run that thru.

temporary block working between Newcastle station and Chester le street. Only EC trains running at present. Anyone heading south to get on first available and change at York. Services north of Newcastle not affected as are Durham coast services but buses to Hexham and Carlisle.

could they not divert affected services via durham coast as a temporary measure or would it need prior planning ?

ou would need locos for dragging EC unless any HSTs suitably located and possubly route knowlefge and pathing constraints.

Depends on train crew route knowledge and traction clearance. HST's can. So if traincrew sign the route then fair enough, although this potentially results in Durham and Darlington stations not being served if the train is routed via picton. Running from billingham via allens west will allow reversal at darlo or via stillington can result in a reversal at Durham which would help, but that would take the best part of an hour and a half where temporary block might only cost half an hour. Wether 91's can run via the coast I cannot say, but they would need to be hauled by a 67. 185's can run via the coast but neither the drivers nor the cons sign the route, hence why I am still sat in the messoom awaiting events and the 08:03 and 09:33 tpe's have been cancelled. As it stands the 11:08 might not be going either!

Having said that, there's engineering works south of York requiring trains to run via sherburn and hambleton rather than along the normal route along the selby diversion. That has tied up the hst's on diversion work so they may be short on diesel stock as it is.

Whats the betting you get a called to take the next EC to York and take a service from there going south if there are no spare traincrew?

On a train...somewhere!
HSTs could run via the coast if sufficient crews were available with route knowledge. Mk4 sets wouldn't be permitted between Pelaw and Sunderland under the Metro OLE if I remember rightly.

GC's 1A60 only left Sunderland 3L so it is the mainline alone that seems to be affected in any way.

XC seem to be turning trains back at Darlington and Newcastle, TPE at Leeds and York. Very few ECs are being allowed through either, with a fair few cancellations showing at Durham.

Think they are gonna keep me here until they can get these two units off Heaton and take them to York. All the northbound crews working from york are being turned back at Darlington so that's keeping the service running from there onwards. With the XC stuff being stuck in Tyne Yard the only trains they can run is those that have worked south from Edinburgh. There's only platform 3 at Newcastle available for anything going south and with the temporary block section from Newcastle to Chester le street, there aren't many trains they can fit through, so they may get turned back at Newcastle. Platforms 9-12 are effectively isolated although 1 and 4-8 can be used. Platform 2 for any arrivals from the south which then can continue to Edinburgh.

TPE services are running through to Darlington. There is a crew there now with what should have been an 11:16 arrival into Newcastle. They are starting the 11:08 from ncl to Mia at darlo.

I think London bound EC services have to be HST anyway, at least until lunch time due engineering work on the ECML between Doni and York

Some Anglo-Scots services have been turned back at York on the other weekends the engineering work has been ongoing!

Yeah, there was 1tph London - Edinburgh run by an HST and 1tph York - Edinburgh run by a 91 yesterday, seems to be roughly the same this morning
