Heritage lines open during weekdays

Hi all,

are there any heritage lines, preferably in the north, that are open on week days? (excluding holiday times)

I want to record the sound of a steam engine for a project I am working on but I have to work at the weekends so I can't visit most of the lines that have them.

Any help appreciated.

Various heritage railways run driver experience days midweek.

Why not give one or more a ring and see if you're ok to make a sound recording on one of these occasions?

I have to say that most lines do not operate atall during January.

I haven't checked many but the Great Central Railway has a steam gala starting on Friday 25th January if that's any good.

Thanks all, I was aware of the driver days but wanted a public day so it would be easier to be there.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is open the whole of the week beginning February 19 - half-term.

The East Lancashire Railway is open W-Thu-Fr from April to July with steam trains running on those days, they also run during July, August and September but they include diesels and DMUs.

The railway is active during the week as our P-Way teams are out (had a nice surprise seeing the 03 on an engineers train last week) as well as driver experience days and photo-charters. None of which show up on the timetables.

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway runs services on from Tuesday 2nd April to 24th September and Thursdays from 25th July to Thursday 29th August.

Also posted on another thread, you can buy a through ticket to stations on the EVR from 50 East Midlands Trains stations in the East Midlands and beyond, including Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leicester and London St. Pancras.

Keighley and Worth Valley operate midweek from the end of may to beginning of September, i believe the north yorkshire moors may start even earlier.

As this now seems to have become a shameless plug thread for preserved railways... I'll put a tuppance in for the North Norfolk Railway! Running between Sheringham and Holt (with a mainline connection at Sheringham), we will be running daily between the 16th and 24th February.. special events taking place in March, which then lead into daily running right through to the end of October, and even then there are services on selected days in November! NYMR open daily from end of March to start of Nov. Check website for details.

Embsay are open most days, and also worth checking the Wensleydale site, as they may be operating steam at a time that suits.

Another way of capturing the sound of a steam loco working would be to go for a main line excursion, quite a few of which are mid week (well they are in summer at least)

If you go to uksteam.info and look at both the tours pages and the loco movement pages, you might find something handy.
