I did hear that owing to engineering works around Reading this year, Steam and Diesel Charters were either not allowed to call at Reading station, or may not infact be allowed even to go through that station. Does anyone know if that is correct?

Yes its the same situation with Nottingham. Network rail have stated they will not allow any charters to run through reading or Nottingham until at least summer 2014. This is due to the rebuilding work going on

There is an article on this in the latest isue of "The Railway Magazine"

Thanks, I thought that was the case. I am supposed to be going on a steam trip from Paddington to Kingswear/Dartmouth in late March, I presume they will have to reroute that, perhaps via the LSWR route to the South West?

That one may be OK - I read somewhere that the restrictions at Reading applied from Easter weekend onwards (last weekend in March)

Thank you, I think you are prob correct as I had a mailshot from Steam dreams yesterday that mentioned a few Charter trains calling at Reading, like my one, until the end of March, when they said after that date Reading will be restricted.

I thought infact they had finished not so long ago, a lot of engineering work in that area, I presume there is more to do there however.

I am sure there is. No doubt written by the specials chap who seems to think that any limitation on charter trains is a crime against humanity. Why such a well regard publication allows such biased commentary is beyond me.

You've only just wondered. I've been wondering for years!

As for Reading. Easter weekend also sees the FGW Diversions again - looking foward to the variety this is going to bring this years of odds and sods getting around the network - and HSTs through BSK.
