Jointly Operated Municipal Services

The other week I travelled from Cardiff to Newport on the number 30 which is the only remaining bus route jointly operated by two municipals. While in Sheffield I travelled on the X78 which is the successor to the 77/78 service which was jointly operated by three municipals (Sheffield/Rotherham/Doncaster).
Where there any other bus routes (am thinking more pre-PTE days) that were operated by three or more municipals? I know there were many services in South Lancashire that had four joint operators (like the 317) but usually only two municipals with an NBC constituant and LUT making up the third and fourth.

Reading and Southend used to jointly run the X1 between those two towns.

X14 service Bristol - Chepstow - Newport. Operated by First West of England and Stagecoach Wales.
And an old one is 349 Bristol - Keynsham - Bristol. Operated by First West of England and Abus Bristol. since First have now brought in New service 338 to replace 337 and 349.
I find them both greedy by not accepting each others tickets.

the Cardiff - Tredgar service used to be run by Cardiff / Rhymney Valley / Islwyn / National Welsh - I think ! Certainly a lot of joint services in South Wales pre dereg

True, but that plan didn't last very long. It was introduced under Coach Deregulation and split within about a year due to financial disagreements. The Reading section was closed down soon after; the Southend portion survived until the 2000s and now has a spiritual successor in NX route 090.

In other words, by the time bus deregulation occurred, the plan had been long forgotten.

Unless I am mistaken, the 77 Sheffield - Doncaster was run by the Sheffield Joint Omnibus Committee (and Doncaster and Rotherham Councils). The SJOC was jointly owned by Sheffield City Council and the railways. The Sheffield to Peak District services ( Castleton, Buxton, Bakewell (2 routes), Sheffield to Manchester via both Woodhead and Snake, plus 85 Sheffield to Worksop and Gainsborough were also SJOC routes.

Re. three municipals, I think that in days gone by the 8 Manchester-Bolton was operated by those councils and by Salford, and the 6 Manchester-Glossop via Ashton by Manchester and Ashton councils and SHMD (also municipally-owned).

Just had a gander at the Salford City Transport Time & Fare table for March 1961 and it has the 8 as being run by Salford, Bolton and LUT. I don't think it actually run in to Manchester as it terminated at Victoria Bus Station (later Greengate in Salford).
I think you may be right with the other one though

Have noticed the 35 Manchester - Bury service was operated by Salford, Manchester and Bury .

Prior to the formation of Rossendale Transport am wondering if route 4 was operated jointly by Accrington, Haslingden and Rawtenstall or just one of the latter two?

Again in the Manchester area, I seem to recall an Oldham-Hyde service in the 60s, which may have been Oldham/Ashton/SHMD joint.

The express X32 Leeds - Sheffield and X33 Bradford - Sheffield had a silly number of operators.

If I remember correctly they were West Riding, Yorkshire Traction, South Yorkshire Transport, West Yorkshire Metro and South Yorkshire PTE - with an hourly service on each route.

SY PTE's bus operation (combining Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield's municipal operators) was called South Yorkshire's Transport. However the was a private company based at Pontefract known as South Yorkshire Road Transport - this was eventually taken over by Arriva. This firms buses didn't operate the White Rose Express Motorway route services X32 andX33 however. I do believe, however that WY operated a vehicle from Bradford on X33, but I think Leeds didn't have a vehicle on X32. As I recall X32 was 2 Yorkshire Traction and 1 SY PTE, whilst X33 (the longer of the two routes) was 1 Bradford WY, 1 West Riding (Liversedge) and 1 Yorkshire Traction.

My recollection is not quite correct and the reality was more complex. For those interested this link provides all the answers, and more (including pictures!).

The 6 was also operated by North Western from their Glossop depot.

The 29/30 ran from Ashton-Hyde-Stockport-Edgeley joint Ashton/SHMD/Stockport
