Are the platforms at WIQ longer than the distance from Canary Wharf?

That has to be the shortest distance between stations on any rail network anywhere, surely?

It's probably taken me longer to type this post than it would to travel between the two stations!

It is definitely the shortest distance between stations.

The distance between platform ends of the two stations appears to be slightly further than the length of platforms. This can be seen when watching a 3 car train travel from one station to the other.

As for distance between stations, Castle Square to Fitzalan Square on the Sheffield Supertram is about 120 yards.

As with Covent Garden and Leicester Square it will be faster to walk between the two.

Don't forget there is a strip of water between West India Quay and Canary Wharf stations ! And a lot of steps from ground level to the platforms.

I have always marvelled at the concentration of DLR stations in this area. And combined with that platform layout at Canary Wharf, I'm inclined to think that life would just be better if West India Quay were teleported to where Canary Wharf is, after erasing what's there now. Et voilà sensible platform arrangement and track layout restored, and no more of these trains that don't stop.

Aye. Although the stations are ridiculously close, you might as well take the DLR as walking will take you a good 15/20.

15 minutes to stroll over to that floating bridge, down to the front of the shopping centre and back in? More like 4/5 to me. Up to 10 for the elderly perhaps. Still the train takes about 25 seconds.

Snow Hill to St. Pauls on the Midland Metro has always struck me as a ludicrously short distance.

The existing Canary Wharf platform arrangement is pretty sensible for the current stopping patterns - being able to use either side not only helps with load/unload speed, but also allows cross-platform interchange between Bank-Lewisham and Stratford-Canary Wharf trains from either direction.

Okay.... So you don't like the fact that certain trains miss West India Quay, so your answer is to close the whole station there :s

No. I've never been there. I don't know how it works, as it is suggested that it does, but my use of the phrase "life would be better" and the verb "teleported" implies that this is uninformed conjecture. My suggestion makes the place look neater. Is West India Quay well patronised? Which trains do not stop there? That wasn't really my point anyway.

My point was "My goodness, what an odd platform arrangement. I think would find that rather confusing"... certainly it would in relation to conventional 4 patform up/down/up/down. But if you tell me it works... and its not like there's any space to modify it...

If you must know, my interest stems from the fact that Victoria might be about to look rather like this (on Manchester Metrolink).

Err yes it is well-used. Take a look at the stations wikipedia page for both some pictures and a description of the dive-under arrangement.

Office blocks and also luxury flats surround both stations.

Heron Quays can't be much further from Canary Wharf than West India Quay is... Slightly off-topic but in my personal experience Heron provides a quicker and easier interchange with Canary Wharf Jubilee Line station than Canary Wharf does.

I'd be interested to know where people using WIQ are actually going. It seems to serve the couple of buildings on the north bank of the quay and little else. Poplar covers the area by the market. Most of the rest of this area is a desert of flyovers and construction sites.

I've only got off there to either Interchange (when Bank trains actually stopped) or to get to the nearby Cineworld, apart from that - theres not much there.

Mostly the strip of bars and restaurants, the cinema and the Museum in Docklands. There usually seem to be a handful of people using it even at quiet times.

In terms of stopping arrangements, all DLR services coming from Canary Wharf stop there, as do all services from Stratford. Off-peak, most services from Bank call, but on-peak they use the new dive-under to avoid crossing the Stratford branch on the level (since both run an enhanced peak frequency)

I also have used Heron Quays to change for Canary Wharf tube than the main DLR station when coming from Lewisham. I'm sure you can see Heron Quays and West India Quay from Canary Wharf's platforms?

Is it a common misconception that One Canada Square is Canary Wharf? Or is it widely accepted that Canary Wharf is the area?

On a related topic, my cousin asked me yesterday what the closest 2 railway stations were in the UK. I could think of this DLR example. I know what the answer is for the Tube too, (Leicester Square to Covent Garden), but I have no clue about National Rail. I can think of close by stations on different lines (St Budeaux Victoria/Ferry Road, Heath High/Low levels, but two consecutive stations? I don't have a clue.

Not sure if LO now comes under this, but Canada Water and Rotherhithe are very close together

I think it's been suggested previously here that the Coryton branch near Cardiff has the two closest NR stations - looking at google maps, presumably Ty Glas and Birchgrove are the two concerned.

Yes, they're the ones. To put things in perspective the distance between these stations (330 yards) is less than two - thirds of the length of the long platform at Gloucester station.

No, Bank - Lewisham trains avoid it all day until 1900

That I'm not 100% sure about, but I recall not calling there when I've been down on a Saturday
