I have a friend who commutes from Arlesey to London Bridge. Currently they pay for an annual season ticket which costs £4,664 (Arlesey to London Zone 1-6). However they were wondering whether there was any cheaper way of undertaking this journey, especially considering the price rises in January.

I had a quick look at the journey on BR Fares and came up with Arlesey to London Terminals (£3,540) then Oyster PAG from London KX - London Bridge via Undergroud (2 single trips, £4, weekly £20, yearly £1040) = £4,580. Not a great saving but its a start.

I would really appreciate it if some of the experts on here could take a look at this journey and tell me whether there are any cheaper alternatives.

Many Thanks,

WestCoastTravel.

I doubt it, unless they are prepared to put up with a slower journey?

Other than possibly splitting at some station where express trains do not call, I can't think how any savings could possibly be achieved.

I do not think slower trains would be an option on this occasion. I have looked at split ticketing without much success.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Looking on the NR season ticket calculator there appears to be a "not underground" ticket from Arlesey specifically to London Bridge (as opposed to London Terminals) for £3860 annual, which is presumably intended to be used into Kings Cross and then Thameslink from St Pancras to London Bridge.

Zone 1 underground single will be £2.10 from Wednesday, rather than £2.

I noticed this too. I doubt it can be beaten

According to brfares.com the London Terminals route Any Permitted fare (£3,540 annual) is valid to London Bridge. Is this incorrect?

London Bridge is in the London Terminals group, so those fares are automatically shown. BR Fares shows all possible fares and doesn't check the routeing guide: Arlesley to London Bridge via King's Cross and Farringdon is not a permitted route, because you are passing through Farringdon, an intermediate station which isn't a London Terminal. So you need to buy the ticket with London Bridge specifically printed on it as the destination.
