So other than Kenneth Grange (see other thread - HST designer Kenneth Grange to be knighted...) (very well deserved) what do we think of the rest?

Not sure I agree with Cherie Blair getting a CBE!

Cherie Blair has got one for her "services to charity" - not because shes married to a man with big ears.

I do wonder about Danny Boyle though, reports he turned a knighthood down - cant see him not being offered one.

As she has been very disrespectful to the Queen and is also a well known hater of everything royal she has some nerve accepting it - typical champagne socialist.

Bit disappointed that Andy Murray only got an OBE - anyone any British (wo)man who wins at Wimbledon deserves a knighthood or a CBE at the very least. IMO

Seriously though, it's a fairly uncontroversial "list" this year- doubt there will be many grumbles about the 43% awarded to "community" people (including Sheffield's own John Burkhill -http://www.justgiving.com/madmanwithpram) or the likes of Bradley Wiggins, Sebastian Coe, Professor Peter Higgs, Quentin Blake etc.

Still, keep up the bitter politics.

For sports awards it seems that they take account of the age of the recipient - if they are still at a stage in their career when they might be expected to improve, they are given a lower award in expectation that they can get a better one when they have a greater achievement. (Besides, it was Jonny Marray who won at Wimbledon )
I feel rather chuffed that someone I coached a little as a junior has been given an MBE for getting her second Paralympic Gold.

Ordinary that sounds like a good plan but it was Wimbledon (geographically, but that's just splitting hairs ) and it should be a exception.

Don't see why sportspeople should be on the honours list for winning. They've already had their recognition - winning medals at the Olympics.

Should be more recognition for the hard working people who help them achieve (eg. physios, trainers etc)

Well David Brailsford (Performance Director Cycling) and David Tanner (Performance Director Rowing) have both been Knighted. Whilst Malcolm Brown (Olympic Triathlon Performance Manager), Ian Coley (Team Manager, Shooting), William Connell (Performance Director, Equestrian), Paul Hall (National Technical Support Coach, Gymnastics), David Howlett (Coach, Sailing), Anthony Hughes (National Performance Manager, Disability Sport Wales), Robert Mccracken (Performance Director, Amateur Boxing), Paul Thompson (Coach, Rowing) have all received MBEs. So I'd say they've received a fair bit of recognition, it's the media that have decided to ignore them.

Yes, they excelled in their sporting event through hard work and talent and were recognised in the Olympics, however I do not believe recognition is necessary in the honours list. There ought to be a stronger focus on who I believe are our true heroes such as the army and emergency services.

Looking at the Guardian's report (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/dec/29/new-year-honours-storey-wiggins), 43% of the awards were to "community" and "voluntary" people. Only 10% were "sports" people.

Yet all of the media reporting is about the famous sports people, and precious little mention of the "local heroes" (I mentioned Sheffield's "Pram Man" earlier) - probably because people outside Sheffield wouldn't know about John Burkhill - and similarly people outside Inverness/ Plymouth/ Wherever wouldn't know about those places' local representatives. We've all heard of Bradley Wiggins though.

So a lot of people complain about too much emphasis on sports people, when the reality is that there's many many more "community" heroes being represented - but the media aren't telling that story.

(my favourite comment is on a "local" Forum to me where someone is ranging about the "so called sportsmen" - I love it when people use "so called" in that kind of context )

The Cabinet Office says

72% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity.

Though that figure may include the usual political and pacification quotas of chief executives of local authorities, judges and chief executives of lobbying charities etc.

Not sure misery guts Andy Murray should get a CBE, other than be an all round decent tennis player, same with most of the other sportspeople especially Mr Wiggins who doesn't support the queen and has been very disrespectful to her majesty in the past so I'm surprised that he accepted.

I mean these people are doing what they normally do and are earning money (a lot in the sportspersons case)from it, like anybody else who works and that's really why I believe honours should be given to those who are doing helpful things such as charity work and doing it in their own time and at their expense for the benefit of other people.
