Doesn't look good and looks like the trackbed on the embankment has given way so it may well be weather related - not too sure on which line it's on as I don't know the area well, but trains cannot call at Barrow-upon-Soar.

Picture was retweeted on Twitter by the MD of EMT.

If trains cannot call at Barrow-on-Soar then it must be the slow lines between Loughborough and Leicester - luckily that means the route isn't totally blocked, unless of course the fast lines (which is pic looks like it's taken from) need to close as well to allow work to take place to repair it.

BBC News article

BBC News said:
East Midlands derailment: Stone spill causes delays

Network rail van Network Rail is working to clear the derailment near Barrow-on-Soar

A freight train carrying stone has derailed in the East Midlands, blocking two rail lines.

The service from Buxton in Derbyshire to Ely in Cambridgeshire derailed in Leicestershire on Thursday morning.

Passenger trains are still able to use two other lines in the area but are not stopping at the Barrow-on-Soar station.

East Midlands Train (EMT) is operating a replacement bus service between Barrow-on-Soar and Loughborough.

The mainline service between London and Sheffield was not affected by the derailment, an EMT spokesman said.

Work to recover the derailed freight carriages is under way and is expected to last several days.

"It may take a few days to completely remove the carriages from the two lines," an EMT spokesman said.

No-one was injured in the incident.

Another article suggested it happened at about 05:30 GMT this morning

I'm guessing if this is rain-caused then they'll have to scoop out the entire bed under the track and rebuild it. Could take a while... Seeing as it took the WCML three days to fully reopen after one loco came off on a point, I can see this taking a fair bit longer.

A little worrying what might have happened if it had been the local 158 and not some stone train.

Derailed freight train blocks lines between Loughborough and Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire

A freight train carrying thousands of tonnes of quarry stone derailed yesterday, blocking two lines.

The incident, which happened shortly before 5.30am, involved a train carrying stone from Buxton, in Derbyshire, to Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Network Rail said the rear 10 carriages of the train left the tracks on an embankment near Pilling's Lock Marina, between Loughborough and Barrow upon Soar.

Initial investigations suggested the derailment could have been caused by a landslip following days of rain.

No-one was injured in the incident.

The accident was captured on camera by Roy Rollings, assistant general manager at the marina.

"I am not surprised they think it could have been caused by a landslip, because of all the rain we have had," Mr Rollings said.

"The derailed wagons were easy to see through the trees and were hundreds of yards from the rest of the train. Workers were on the scene for several hours examining what had happened.

"It is good to know no-one was injured."

Work to recover the derailed freight carriages is expected to take several days.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "The incident has been reported to the Rail Accident Investigation Bureau.

"The train was taking stone from a quarry in Derbyshire to Cambridgeshire.

"It looks as if the derailment, which involved the rear half of the train, was caused by a landslip.

"A number of the 10 wagons involved had fallen on their sides. The driver was unhurt."

The Network Rail spokesman said the four-track section of the Leicester to Nottingham line had been examined to see if the landslip had affected the two fast lines used for passenger services. He said: "We temporarily stopped those services to check the track and they were later resumed."
Midland mainline trains have continued to use the lines, but services were not stopping at Barrow upon Soar station.

East Midlands Trains put on a replacement bus service between Barrow upon Soar and Loughborough.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "The derailment happened at 5.30am and blocked the two slower lines between Barrow upon Soar and Loughborough.

"Mainline services are running normally but a replacement bus service has been introduced between Loughborough and Barrow-upon-Soar stations."
She said the bus service would continue to operate until the two slow lines were reopened.

It is not known how many days this will take.

EMT have just posted this on their Facebook account:

EMT London services will be disrupted between 2000hrs -0800hrs on 28,29,30,31 December and early morning 1 Jan more info. available later today

If you are travelling with EMT Advance tickets and affected by
disruption on the London route your tickets will be valid on earlier or later services

The disruption on EMT London services is due to Emergency Engineering work between Leicester and Loughborough.

being a local that area is known for copping lots of rain and having flooding anyway, so I can see why there would be the thought that this is weather related.

At least it was a freight train and at least it wasn't in the middle of the peak hours, so no injuries which is cool.

anyone know what was hauling the train at the time???

hadn't seen this when typing my post, but will say that it seems like a more serious situation than we think!

At least they will have a couple of thousand tons of best quality limestone already on site ready for stabilising the embankment, delivered bang on time!

And Lafarge have their rail terminal for the Mountsorrel granite quarry only a mile or so away.
The foot of the bank has now been under water for over a month although it historically is a flood plain so has been engineered as such

Normal quality journalism from the Leicester mercury on the matter 'both inter-city and East Midlands Trains services have been affected. Midland mainline trains have continued to use the lines, but services were not stopping at Barrow upon Soar station.' Unfortunately this is not on their website.

Can anyone advise me on this problem with EMT please?

I am due to travel on the 1055 London to Sheffield train on Saturday returning on the 1827 the same day. I treated myself to 1st class advance tickets.

Not sure whether these services will be running and EMT have said I can go via East Coast trains to Doncaster and then on to Sheffield.

Can I sit in the 1st class carriages of the East Coast trains or is back to good old standard class?

Thanks

Line closure now brought forward to 1700 with no notice...not good and will cause far more disruption.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/today.html details the line closure

A freight train has derailed at Barrow-upon-Soar.
Because of this, trains are unable to call at Barrow-upon-Soar. Buses are running between Loughborough and Barrow-upon-Soar to connect with trains. There is no current estimate for when a normal service will resume.
Until approximately 08:00 on Saturday 29 December
Network Rail is undertaking engineering work in the Barrow-upon-Soar area overnight. Because of this the following alterations will apply:
Trains between Nottingham and London St Pancras International will either be cancelled or will only run between Leicester and London St Pancras International
Trains between Leicester and Lincoln Central will either be cancelled or will only run between Loughborough and Lincoln Central
Buses are running between Leicester and Loughborough / Nottingham / Derby as required

The National Rail Enquiries website suggests that the line will be closed from 1700. Trains seem to be running through the area at the moment though!

Latest Network Rail log entry (as of 1706) is still giving details of a 20:00 possession, EMT website says the same but also very limited service after 18:00

It sounds like the Maidenhead..or rather Hayes and Harlington confusion from yesterday all over again...why can't National Rail get anything right. Add to this that their website says buses Topsham to Exmouth till at least Jan 3rd and their Twitter says services are running again...this is getting beyond a joke now.

Add to all this that its Derby to Leicester not running too and that one link posted on NRES Twitter
National Rail ‏@nationalrailenq
RT @emtrains: #EMTrains Due to the disruption to our London services travel with other companies is recommended, see: http://goo.gl/BxRli

sends you to a map of alternative routes between London and Leicester stating that bit of the line is closed when it isn't....VERY poor.

Amended timetable now on EMTs website the 10:55 from London is running as normal so you MUST still travel on it. However the 18:27 is not running at all there is however a service at 18:47 which arrives at 21:06 but it is the first one for over 2 hours and last so will be very busy even in first.

On a train...somewhere!
The closure last night did seem very sudden, a significant number of EMT passengers were onboard our 1D95 last night between KGX and DON

It really is appalling, an emergency timetable is apparently in operation today and tomorrow, yet both NRE and EMT are giving normal times on their sites.

EMT gives a link to the emergency timetables which doesn't work!

I was booked first class on the 19:27 Sheffield to St.Pancras which was cancelled last night and my ticket was okay for the First TPE to Doncaster and East Coast First Class (both of which were better than EM's first) and I only arived at Kings Cross 20 minutes later than I was due at St.Pancras on the EMT service.

Going to take up to a week more to reopen, the up slow side of the track across fields requires a roadway being put in to get the heavy lifting gear in, closure of all 4 lines required from mid evening until 6.30 am.
Pictures by Leicester Mercury have been rubbish
