Northern £10 go anywhere offer

Northern sent me a link to their latest offer however when I tried to arrange a day out to the likes of Leeds or Doncaster ( I live in Warrington) using the Northern web site it always show journeys that involve Northern and another company, the likes of TPE or EMT. If I go to the NRE site and select Northern only that also shows trains using a combination of Northern and an other company. Any help on how to just get Northern services or is that not possible?

Not sure how you can do it on a journey planner other than plan in stages. From Warrington you have the option of going to Manchester Oxford Road (direct, though you can change here to get to Piccadilly) or to Manchester Victoria/Piccadilly (via Earlestown). From Manchester trains to Leeds are from Victoria (either via Hebden Bridge or Stalybridge/Huddersfield). To Doncaster would be on the slow train to Sheffield (from Piccadilly) and change, or to Leeds (from Victoria) and change.

www.northernrail.org has all the Northern timetables sorted by station if that is easier.

It will be showing the quickest options for your journey, and on many routes across the Pennines, Northern operate the slower and/or less frequent services.

What you could do is use opentraintimes.com and plan each leg separately.

I only got the staff brief yesterday (though because of email issues I only heard about it this morning). It is a day ticket for Northern Rail services only between 27th and 30th December inclusive only.

You need to register to MyNorthern (and allow marketing emails) and download a form. You cannot purchase these tickets on the train (even from unmanned stations), only at staffed stations from a ticket office (it does not have to be a Northern Rail ticket office). Photocopies of the form are not acceptable. A maximum of four tickets per form is allowed, though they may be adult (£10) or child (£5) tickets, for travel on the same day. There must be at least one adult ticket purchased. No further discounts apply.

Not sure, I've not seen the issuing instructions yet. When I say for travel on the same day, I mean that the people have to travel on the same day as each other.

Well, still no issuing instructions but, having had a look around my FasTIS today, it is in the rover section so it is possible to issue in advance, no idea if it supposed to be though.

I used one in September & bought it the day before at Morecambe station because the day I was using it the station ticket office wouldn't be open until after I had left on an early train.

If someone hasn't been able to get to a staffed ticket office before the day, and wants to use this offer from an unstaffed station where there is a TVM, must they purchase a ticket from the TVM to the nearest staffed station and exchange the voucher there? Can the cost of said ticket be deducted from the £10 Rover?

If however the unstaffed station has no ticket-issuing facilities whatsoever and the train is a Northern train, is it likely that the guard will let the voucher-holding passenger off the cost of the journey to the nearest staffed station?

Also, does anybody know how to get from Ellesmere Port to Carlisle via Settle on Northern services only? I have looked everywhere and nothing is coming up that's decent.

Using Northern only? Tricky, there are two trains daily that run Preston to Lancaster, the 0522 and the 0838. The only way to get to Preston in time for the 0838 is to get the 0619 to Helsby or the 0653 to Warrington and then use VWC services (and ATW if going on the 0619) to Preston. From Lancaster you could get to Settle and on to Carlisle.

The only other way would be to get to Warrington then head to Manchester, then to Leeds (from Victoria) then to Carlisle via Settle. It would be tricky to get there and back in a day.

You could take the "short" walk to Warrington Central for a train to Deansgate or Oxford Road, they *should* be running again tomorrow.

I made use of one of these £10 Northern Rangers today. I didn't do anything major long distance but it gave me the chance to travel over a couple of lines I haven't been over for years. These were Sheffield to York via Pontefract Baghill and also York to Leeds via Harrogate. It also gave me the opportunity to have a wander around the lovely old town of Knaresborough and also a visit to Harrogate.
If it had been during the summer with lighter nights and warmer weather I may have travelled further. I would have liked to have done another trip using one of these tickets but have relatives staying and so can't really leave them for another day!

A great day out just slightly spoilt by the parking charge of £9.50 at Chesterfield station which I did think a bit excessive for 27th December which is hardly a peak time for travel for commuters etc. I've never seen Chesterfield station car park so empty which just goes to show that it was really an off peak day just like a Saturday would be.

I have rearranged the trip and will be leaving from Chester instead and getting the train from vic to Leeds then Carlisle then getting the 15:25 to Preston to change for Liverpool. I can do Capenhurst-Chester and Liverpool-Capenhurst on day savers. I figured leaving from Ellesmere port would be a bit tight

I'm hoping to use a voucher in 10 minutes time. Called Northern customer relations twice and got two different answers. First guy said fine to buy on train if unstaffed station and the second said must be booking office (and couldn't answer whether the cost of going train ticket to there would be deducted or not).

For what its worth I wouldnt sell it on the train, we aren't allowed to sell the friends and.family tickets on board or the rover tickets which are part of newspaper offers so I can't see this being different. All internal promotions have only mentionned ticket offices.

A fair comment. But (and I don't mean to criticise or question you) surely the "entitled to the full range" part of the NRCOC prevents Northern from having a ticket office only clause?

I honestly don't know, its in the same category to me as why aren't we allowed to sell West Yorkshire Dayrovers on train. I'm not saying its right or that I agree at all. But consistent policy for these things has been not to sell it on board

I've timed the 0838 going through Cadley as early as 0832 before, and sometimes as late as 0850. It might just be my phone clock but I'd still be wary.
