Free Travel on FCC NYE

I see that FCC is allowing passengers free travel on FCC services from 23.45 on 31 December 2012 until 04.30.

Do you have to have a ticket reservation or do you just turn up and go?

Any other TOC have free travel?

Turn up and go. Same every year, it's easier all around and allows staff to manage crowds by all staff doing customer care.

All London Underground and DLR services are free to travel from 2345 to 0429 on New Year's Eve/Day iirc as well. London Overground are free from 2345 until the end of service

In contrast, nothing in Birmingham where the last departure from New Street is the 2354 to Coventry and last arrival the 0008 from Walsall. First train New Year's Day is at 0625 for Aberystwyth.

Does Birmingham do anything on the scale of London for New Year though ? The free transport (sponsored by Diageo - the alcohol drink makers) is to get the incredibly high amount of revellers home quickly, having free transport encourages use of it so people won't drive.

No idea how many people went to the London events last year, must be tens of thousands.

As you say it's crowd dispersal. People would have already paid to get there in most cases or hold a season ticket so loss of revenue is minor.

Indeed; revenue loss is minimal particularly on the Tocs where people will probably pay for the outward journey. I also suspect that Revenue staff would probably not bother, or be better deployed to other duties if they are even working then.

Although in my experience of congestion control at stations, ticket barriers for incoming customers are quite useful in slowing down customers and helping to maintain a steady stream, but on exit it's better to have as many people leaving as quickly as possible.

I guess not but I would like to go clubbing and be able to get home before it gets light!

I was just about to post that after reading those comments on twitter!

I think its quite generous to offer free travel at all. What are these people who are complaining expecting exactly?! Give 'em an inch and the ask for a mile...

Indeed, people on this very thread have already highlighted that revenue loss will be negligible for precisely that reason...

I can't believe people are moaning. Staff are better used for crowd control (including helping all the drunks) and by making it free, they can't be accused by those with tickets of not bothering to protect revenue.

Most people will have a ticket already. So what? Do these idiots want returns scrapped so they can be forced to buy two singles and now appear to have a bigger saving for one short time once a year?
