Places 171s Have Visited

I was wondering where Southern's 171s have visited out of the ordinary. I understand there's an ECS working from Eastbourne to Selhurst via Plumpton and Redhill every night but aside from that, where have they been outside their normal territory (especially in passenger service)?

well one is but the rest were built as 171's, they have also ventured over onto the GWML to Ealing Broardway while route leaning for the service that never ran. There is also an early morning selhurst- eastbourne balancing move, and also a couple of short workings in the evening london bridge - east croydon.

721-726 & 730 (as 392) were built as 170's. 727-729 & all the 4 cars were built as 171's.

I went on one in York at the NRM when they'd first been delivered.. That's fairly out of the way for them!

I remember reading about that Ealing Broadway service now. Wasn't it scrapped because of the lack of other units it could couple to in an emergency?

I don't think they would be permitted in the central section of Victoria because of the lack of proper ventilation for diesels but they certainly could visit the Eastern side.

I don't think they would be permitted in the central section of Victoria because of the lack of proper ventilation for diesels but they certainly could visit the Eastern side.

The Ealing service was scrapped for that reason, a failed 171 blocking the line with a different coupler to other units would ruin service on the GWML.

Your right about Victoria, the vents are where the thumper exhausts were, different place on the 171. I think the path from Croydon to Victoria was needed by another service too.

Yep, some have ran in service to Haywards Heath, then down to Brighton via Hassocks as well still in service when the line between Lewes and Brighton has been blocked, very rare though.

Some 171s run ECS from London Bridge to Selhurst via Streatham Common to keep up route knowledge in case of diversion too.

It's not for route knowledge (the drivers on those 171s work London Bridge - West Croydon via Tulse Hill on a regular basis), it's because of lack of paths down the main from London Bridge to Norwood Jct and into Selhurst that way. Loads of empties go to Selhurst via Tulse Hill after the morning peak, not just 171s but 377s and 455/6s too.

171s occasionally stable overnight at East Grinstead for running Oxted - Uckfield shuttles when the line between South Croydon and Oxted is closed for engineering works.

I've been on one diverted through Palace at short notice due to a bridge strike, I believe. It went on to London Bridge.

I'm not aware that they've even been sent to Victoria as an experiment, if anyone would like to help speculate on this?

171s occasionally stable overnight at East Grinstead for running Oxted - Uckfield shuttles when the line between South Croydon and Oxted is closed for engineering works.

Some of those happening in January if anyone's interested. Also appear to be some stabling in Uckfield itself. I'm sure locals are thrilled if they leave them idling.

That would be Exeter / Reading / Brighton / Totton / Salisbury & London Waterloo then. I'll always remember that unit, not just for the 'lovely' astro turf moquette, not just for the first unit i had along the Chandelors Ford line, but also because of the typically bad Bombardier vibrations in it's later years. Simply put your phone in the middle of the table as it departs a station, and watch it fall off within a minute or two.

I think during the snow a few years ago they ran shuttles between Victoria and Brighton due to them not requiring 3rd rail. I believe they went from the south eastern platforms due the restrictions on fumes on the central platforms due to the low roof.

I remember something like that, too, but I may just be randomly making it up in my head. I seem to remember they called at Redhill, but I never actually got on one.
