I'm just wondering if anybody knows of any flexible tickets, or combinations of such tickets, that would allow me to travel from Hull-Oxford on 28/12 via Birmingham, returning via London on 04/01, that are cheaper than the normal Any Permitted through tickets. I am a YP holder, and I need to arrive before 1700 and return after 1900. On the return journey I believe I will have to break my journey at Doncaster or York and continue to Hull by car.

For the most flexibility, the immediately obvious option would be to buy the "Not Via London" ticket for £65.35, with an excess to an "Any Permitted" Super Off-Peak (£77.55) for the return leg. The excess would be £6.10 (i.e. half the difference in fares), so that'd bring the cost down to £71.45.

Doubt you'd save that much by splitting, at least with walk-up tickets...

Just to confirm, it should be okay to excess the ticket from an SVR to an SSR? I note there is an SVR for both flows.

Excesses should be done using the "appropriate" fare. In this case, the East Coast Super Off-Peak is the equivalent of an XC Off-Peak, though they may attempt to charge the excess to the more expensive SVR (former Business Saver)...or tell you it can't be done at all.

If possible, I would suggest requesting the excess at a "good" ticket office, such as Oxford. I have found the likes of Birmingham New Street less useful in the past.
