My daughter was travelling from Wymondham to Middlesbrough last week and was caught up in the service disruptions from the bad weather. Her 0915 East Coast train from Peterborough to Darlington finished short at York. This meant that, instead of connecting onto 1059 Northallerton-Middlesbrough and arriving at 1130, there was a need to change at York and Darlington which would then arrive at 1219.

I assume that, despite the multiple TOCs in the journey it is East Coast to whom a Delay Replay claim should be made (as it was their finishing short that led to a delay of over 30 minutes).

However, when completing the claim form on the East Coast website ( at http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/about-us/passengers-charter1/delay-repay/delayrepayform/) it is not clear how to express the reason for the claim. It asks the length of delay in minutes. For the East Coast section of the journey there was not a delay per se. It was their finishing short that led to a late arrival at Middlesbrough so do I put the number of minutes late in reaching the destination even though the Northern Rail train into Middlesbrough was not itself late? There does not seem to be any way of referring to the East Coast train finishing short, even through it was the cause of the delay as if I try and type an explanation into the 'minutes late' box it insists that a number should be entered rather than text.

What is the right way of expressing this situation on the form?

I'd revert to emailing the EC with a scan of the tickets.

Have never used the EC form but have looked at it. It is missing the "Reason for delay" question that is on the SET form, which I have used twice in two weeks, and has an option for "Service Cancelled Mid Journey".

I suggest that you enter the details for the whole journey, hopefully they will contact you if there are any queries. Alternatively you could download a printable form and submit by post with a note of explanation.

I just write an old fashioned letter explaining what happened - always works.

I scan the tickets then in the same jpg (or whatever) file add some text to explain the reason for the claim.

I usually print off the Delay Repay form in this case, and after filling it in, just a note or write PTO and explain the nature of the delay on the back before posting it in

Put the number of minutes late arriving at destination. East Coast should be able to work out from your journey start time and destination what happened, and contact you if they need any further clarification.

It asks for the journey details, it does not ask for details of any leg in particular.

So you need the departure time and departure station (Wymondham), the arrival station (Middlesbrough) and the length of delay (49 minutes). There is nowhere on the form to detail all the trains caught therefore I can only assume they are prepared to work it out themselves (and, if they can't, will contact you for further information).
