Yeah GDT, I can't even get the name right.

Looking forward to it and apologies to the rest for going off on a tangent...I'll stick to the thread now !

Well done Lanc. I told you it would work out ! The hard part is getting to that final interview. Bet that last 4 weeks has dragged waiting for them to get back to you. Did they ring you first with the good news or is it all by email?

Hi mate,

It was by phone today, which is quite nice.

Like I said before, I'm often highly critical of myself and to be honest with the calibre of some of the guys, this really was hit and miss and certainly far from a given.

Thanks for your support mate.

Quite surprised to be honest !

I've been offered one of the positions (provisionally pending med of course)and to start 04 Feb 13.....not Jan...it seems there was a slight delay.

I did ask HR for feedback and they were certainly keen to give it. I was entirely right about the fact that I came across a little 'self assured', however it seems the other parts of the interview managed to offset this mild character trait.

I took the polite rollicking and possibly the most eloquently put warning I have ever had and assured the lovely HR lady that I would remember that I was happy to remind myself, that I was entering an industry where i am in effect 'starting again' with little or no experience of the industry.

To be honest, although dragging out a bit towards the end, I actually found the HR team massively professional to the end (of course I may now be biased) and felt it put my own outfit to shame in some respects.

I am ecstatic and look fwd to (hopefully) getting through the med with no snags.

Vic....HR are going to get back to me ref training venue, but I belive you had indicated LLS, is that right ? Just wondered !

Best of luck to the others, especially you Manctrain and Graycam !

Lanc

Nice one Lanc and congrats!!!

In the very first interview the HR Manager stated that training would be done at LLS. However in the train managers interview both HR and the train manager said training would be carried out mainly in Manchester but also with a small part in Hudersfield as well.
I am moving to Liverpool so asked how this would work and they said that TPE would put me up in Manchester during the week for the first 4 months and after that training would switch to mostly LLP as that was where I had asked to be based when I applied for the position.

The start date quoted on the final interview by TPE was 'early to mid January' however a TPE employee had since said that the date had been set at 7th Jan, I wouldn't be suprised if it was now not until Feb.

The medical consisted of tests for BMI, sight, hearing, ECG, alcohol, drugs, diabetes, blood pressure, and a general written tick the boxes questionaire with a nurse. And then a mobility, listen to your breathing and heart, run through ECG results etc. with a doctor, and more health related questions. At the end the doc tells you if it's a pass or fail (pending drugs results). They have never said to me that it was a job offer subject to a medical though, just that I have been 'invited to attend an interview'.
Mine was done on Friday and they said TPE would have results by Monday so a fairly fast turnaround.

Now just waiting to hear back from TPE.

When is your medical and good luck?

Ground Position Lights (signals). Guessing they are all over the depot in randon locations.

Cheers Vic....I know what a VPL is mate, just not a GPL....I guess at this juncture you now realise that I know absolutely nothing about the Rail industry...I really am starting from scratch ;)

Having seen the Trg of experienced guys and 'boil in the bags' in my own industry...It's not always a bad thing tho !

Congrats on joining us in the train driver grade Lanc688. I think from your posts here you'll be an excellent trainee. Get your instructor a cup of tea when you first meet him. Helps smooth the way. :)

Commiserations Gray. Could i just ask how you found out? I haven't heard either way yet over four weeks after final interview.

Thanks

I would phone HR mate, 4 weeks is long enough without hearing anything especially when you know others have.

At least then you know where you stand even if TPE are still undecided and if they still havent made their mind up then they will be able to give a timescale.

Good Luck with it.

I have watched these posts with interest having dropped out in the early rounds. Its great to see the successes, and I can only imagine the disapointment if you don't get through at the interview stage.
However all clouds have silver linings. I'm still in the trainee driver X factor at Northern and it has proved that "Never give up" is the only way with Railway recruitment.

If Graycam has been told a definate No, then anyone else who hasn't heard such as Manctrain must still be in the hat. I believe TPE will have picked the top interview scorers who are now having/had medicals. TPE will have to allow for the possibilty of someone failing their medical, and would then need a second pool of candidates for each depot.

I suspect Manctrain has passed the interview but not scored as high as others, so hopefully is still in the hat for any medical failures or the next intake in June. You've gotta think positive:D

Manc....I can only sympathise with your frustration as I was at that point early this week too.

On the bright side, it is clear that you are massively suitable as I'm sure many others here are. I would imagine that you and many of those others sit in a good position whereby future applications will be looked upon favourably.

We all would have heard back pretty quickly had our faces not fitted at all.

Please keep us updated mate......sincerely...good luck !

Serious congratulations are in order! Well done on getting through what is a seriously demanding recruitment process.

Following success stories like yours just shows that it can be done and gives renewed optimism to people like me who are currently in the process of trying to make the grade.

(I doff my cap to you good sir) ;)

One thing that is very apparent from these forums is that TOC's seem to have two speeds when it comes to recruitment - slow and slower.

On Wednesday it will be 8 weeks since my interview and I have still not had an email with a decision. Anyone else in a similar position? I think i will get a no once everyone who has had a yes passes their medical. I would actually be happy if FTPE just told me that!

Manc...how you getting on with Northern?

Lanc

Hi Mate

Had interview earlier this week, thought it went better than the FTPE one, but looking at the Northern thread a lot of people seem fairly confident. The interviewers were incredibly good at putting you at ease. But if there's one thing this process teaches you it's not to get your hopes up! Hopefully should hear within next two weeks.
Got everything crossed.

Seriously, hope our paths cross next year with a bit/lot of luck.

Medical today with BUPA......Passed !

Went well.....Blood Pressure a little high to start with, however normal second try!

A little worrying when the nurse AND the doc both had the ECG instruction manual out in an attempt to figure out which connector went with which limb....however it seems that eventually with a little encouragement from myself....I do have a heart beat after all !

According to nurse....my hearing is close to that of a small child.....she seemd to think that was a good thing; however , having 2 small children myself.... that's actually a little worrying !

My blood pressure was skiing in the Alps for a while, but soon calmed down after a nurse led conversation about shopping !

I can read and even see different colours...I was at one point worried a little however, when I couldnt read the coloured number half way in the book; the nurse told me that that was a good thing yet again.....apparantly if you can read THAT number you are coulour blind!

The best bit was the Doc's mobility test....trust me...if you have a go at 'Just Dance 4' this Christmas....you'll nail it !

To Manctrain....you can't have my place, but hope you do well with Northern.

To all those expecting medicals......Buy Just Dance 4, or even dig out your folks Village People Album !

To Vic....see you in Feb !

Had a look, but struggling to see what the "hiccup" is. Is it just that you have to do the Mech Comp ?

I wish it was that!

Northern have changed their policy so that, in a nutshell, if you've taken any parts of the tests in the last six months (and passed) but not the full tests (which includes the mech test) then they won't now allow you to take the remaining parts. The one saving grace is that they've said that they will put me in for the assessments as soon as my six months is up in March. It seems very bizarre to me, I even phoned DBS to see if I could do just the mech test privately but I can't.
So FTPE not doing the mech test has stitched me up.
