Hello
Im wanting to travel to London (Kings Cross) from Wakefield on Sunday 17th Feb in the morning, Dump my bag in the hotel then onward to Twickenham before 14.00 and returning anytime after 17.00 to London (Kings Cross)

Cheapest i have found so far is 8.57 Kirkgate to Kings Cross (grand Central) @ £10.25 advance and London Waterloo to Twickenham return @ £8.50

Plus a days travel on the tube zones 1+2 @ £7.00

Monday 18th I need a zones 1+2 tube ticket and also planning on going to Gravesend to meet a friend.

An off peak tube zones 1+2 @ £7.00
and also an off peak return from St Pancras to Gravesend priced at £15.20

Tuesday 19th Returning back to Wakefield after 11am.

East Coast 11.05 @ £13.00 advance.

Total Price £61.00 ish

Is it possible to make this journey any cheaper? I have no railcards and would prefer to use the shorter more expensive journey between London and Gravesend (I presume this is a HS1 train)

Thanks in anticipation

Grab it, immediately! It doesn't get any better than that.

A £8.50 (2012 price) Zone 1-6 Off-Peak Day Travelcard will cover all this. Grand Central will sell it to you on the train from Wakefield at the £8.90 2013 price, or East Coast will sell it to you online today only at the 2012 price. Search for Finsbury Park to London Zones 1-6. We expect 2013 prices to be charged for tickets for travel on and after 2 January 2013 bought on or after 3 December 2012.

We would be able to give advice on this if we knew the times and stations for your tube zones 1+2 travel.
Tuesday 19th Returning back to Wakefield after 11am.

East Coast 11.05 @ £13.00 advance.
Again, a very good price.

It would still be useful to know which tube station(s) you intend to start and end your journey(s) at.

I'm trying to work out if there are nearby rail stations. If so, a return from the rail station to Gravesend may be best. If not, I will probably recommend Oyster Pay-As-You-Go. But I don't have enough information yet.

I will staying near moorgate tube station
Then I suggest you get an Oyster card and use Oyster Pay-As-You-Go. You can buy a Card from machines at Kings Cross Tube for £5 deposit plus the amount of credit you choose to put on the card. At the end of your trip to London, you can choose whether to return your card to a Tube ticket office for refund of remaining credit and deposit, or to keep it for your next visit to London. I choose to do the latter.

On Sunday 17 Feb, use the Oyster card for all journeys after arriving in London. As long as you touch in and out on each journey, you won't be charged more than £8.50 within Zones 1-6.

On Monday 18 Feb, either
  • use Oyster Pay-As-You-Go Moorgate - St Pancras and return, and your London - Gravesend route Plus High Speed ticket from and back to St Pancras, or
  • walk from Moorgate to and from Liverpool St, and use your London - Gravesend route Plus High Speed ticket from and back to Liverpool St, with a walk or DLR between Stratford Regional and Stratford International. This is valid because it's a shorter route than to and from St Pancras, and the shortest route is always a Permitted Route. It costs less money, but is less straightforward. If I were using this route, I would make sure I bought my Gravesend ticket a day or two prior to travel because we have had some reports here of some Liverpool St rail staff not being familiar with the validity of High Speed tickets at that station.
On Tuesday 19 Feb, use Oyster Pay-As-You-Go Moorgate - Kings X.

Enjoy the trip!
