How hard would it be to make the doors on - say - a 365 automatically close after 30 seconds to keep the carriage warm? Expensive? Seems like a good thing for a TOC to put in a franchise bid.

modern units have this. Might not be financially viable for 365s and older- if you're sat near the door at a long dwell, you'll just have to shut them yourself if someone leaves them open.

I have noticed on this newsgroup and elsewhere, a frequent response to perfectly sensible suggestions, is "too expensive". Unless someone looked into it properly and gave a quotation, how can they say?

It is often the case that modifications of this kind can be carried out relatively inexpensively when heavy overhauls are being carried out and major items of equipment are being replaced as obsolete or worn out.

It's probably not that hard.. a simple modification to the door buttons I'd imagine. It might even be an off the shelf part.

However, 365s don't have air conditioning. In the summer, you'd want those doors kept open. In the Winter, you'd want them closed - but a fair few people do board on a cold/wet day and shut the door behind them (more so in rush hour than at a weekend with people who probably don't even know you can shut them!) so it isn't that necessary.

When they get their refurbishment, they may well get new door buttons because I believe the buttons are positioned as open (bottom) and close (top) and now I've seen on here that it's meant to be open (top) and close (button)... rather like the older trains had it before the rules changed, presumably so people in a wheelchair could reach the open button (and not necessarily have any need to press close at all).

Given the known issues with the doors on a 365 though, I am not sure you'd want the doors closing by themselves - they'd probably hurt people who boarded while they closed. I've 'tested' them using my foot, with strong shoes, and you don't want them hitting you to detect an obstruction!

May seem like a good thing, but not if there isn't a sensor like you get on a lift so it doesn't close on you!

Last year I was getting on a train at St Pancras which had auto-closing doors which were quick and didn't have sensors. I had a cup of coffee in my hand and was wearing a white shirt... which I had to replace when I got to Leicester!

I believe all of the Networker derivatives have auto close as an option, but the majority have it disabled as the hustle alarm doesn't sound when it's used! Fairly certain Great Western's 165/1s and 166s had auto close enabled last time I went on them though...

Cheers,

Barry

What idiot thought to have autoclose without any form of warning?! No wonder it's disabled - those doors hurt if they close on you.

I seem to remember this is a feature of the regulations which were issued to make life easier for the disabled 20 odd years ago. As is often the case when the regulations were implemented it was discovered they were poorly thought out and the feature had to be disabled as it resulted in the door closing operation with no warning.

The regs have now been changed but the trains have not.

165 to be pedantic ;)

When I saw this thread I was thinking more of the Autoclose mechanisms on the continent that close and lock slam doors. They were around when the Mk3s were built so why not fit them (though I'd hope there would be warning, they are violent!)

350's have them, misleading as it beeps and you think it's actually going when all it's doing is shutting them. Voyagers do the same too.

At Euston I arrived at the platform ramp about 5 minutes before the train left, so plenty of time from there to the train, and the doors shut and me looking like an idiot pegged it to the train thinking they were being sly and sending it out early , and then I tripped up over my laptop bag and ripped my trousers, when all I had to do was walk up to the door and open it.
