Well over a year since I last asked this question !!!

Is anyone (like me) still not on either ?

Can't see the attraction of the two of them - perhaps someone could convince me otherwise of their merits.

I'm only on Facebook because I'm using it for its originally-intended purpose: keeping up with (and in contact with) all the various social circles a university student moves in. Mark Zuckerberg would be proud.

Twitter, I browse it frequently but don't have an account because I've got sod-all interesting worth tweeting about (and unlike the vast majority of Twitter users I've actually realized this ).

What is facebook used for now then other than it's original intended use ?

I joined it late last year after vowing not too. It was for a good reason though.

A good friend and colleague of mine was having a Grandson. However he was diagnosed as having Edwards Syndrome and various other problems and the parents were told that he would be highly unlikely to survive birth and that they should consider a termination. They decided against this as they felt that if there was even a slight chance he could live then they had no right to take that away from their child. There was also a large number of other complications and my friend was getting kind of inundated with requests for updates on the whole situation. So she decided to set-up a FB group so as anyone could post updates about what was happening etc.

That's why I joined up.

The little man himself survived the birth and has defied the odds. He has had to have major heart surgery and various other procedures done and has spent large amounts of time in hospital.

He celebrated his 1st Birthday 4 days ago and is at home with his family.

(I have decided to use it for the usual FB things that people do too now as I have an account. Mostly I just muck about on it though really).

For children to post shedloads of boring pictures of themselves, and for companies to market themselves whilst pretending to provide a means of contact. At least that's what it looks like to me.

Oh, and Farmville.

Was it really that hard to Google it?

Thankyou as usual you have provided the link

How did facebook overtake Bebo and was it My Space who were I believe pioneers in this type of service. What did it have that they didn't ?

And meaning you need to go on it at least once a day for the rest of your life because you need to water your crops else they'll die and you'll lose money.

Is it like a tamagochi or whatever they were called - those bleeping oversized keyrings !! (the operation)

Have you seen Bebo and Myspace?! I guess not, or it'd be self-explanatory.

A Google search for something like "decline of bebo" or "decline of Myspace" should provide you with plenty of reading material.

I use Facebook as the simplest way to share photos of my daughters with relatives living in the southern hemisphere. My email through a strop if tried emailing more than 2-3 pics at a time.

iM sure bebo was being closed down by its owners due to its decline. MySpace was simply full of poor musicians spamming trying to get spotted, these days YouTube is a far better resource for this.

For one, it's now designed to let you connect to people who aren't friends or family, be able to subscribe to get updates from people you've never met (or worked with, as it's accepted that Facebook is popular for people to stay connected to colleagues, clients etc).

What I'm talking about is following famous people (sort of trying to copy Twitter) who open up their feeds (or some of them) to the public, as well as liking businesses and Facebook pages that helps Facebook target you - and your friends - with adverts.

I am not saying it's a bad thing and Facebook needs to make money, but I doubt many people are still using it for what it was originally created for.. a social network for people you might actually be social with!

Twitter isn't really something everyone needs to have, or use, but it's good for following businesses and seeing what people are talking about with regards to events - whether that's serious news or celebrity gossip/X Factor. You're not forced to follow anyone that doesn't say anything of interest to you, so with practice you can filter things very well.

For getting travel updates, Twitter is excellent - although some companies do a better job than others. I've also moaned about poor service with companies/shops and often had things resolved very quickly by the company listening out for their business being mentioned.

From what I can tell it's like SimCity for vegetables. In both senses of the word.

Possibly one of the funniest things I've read in ages..

If Farmville was still topical, I'd have stolen that and Tweeted it right away...

I still use both. Facebook for posting stuff nobody cares about, Twitter to annoy everyone. Fun times can be had.

I use facebook. It's great for talking to people and posting stuff. Don't do twitter as I haven't got round to it.

What gets on my tits is those game requests, if I were PM, I'd ban them

Still not tweeting, in spite of pressure to do so (and almost infinite links to others' tweets), and still only use FB on occasion. I have had a slight peak in FB usage over the last few weeks - a peak being defined as more than one visit per month - owing to all the stuff that has gone on over the last month, a large proportion of which was first posted on here before FB.

Facebook for posting stuff nobody cares about, Twitter to annoy everyone.

This seems like a pretty good reflection of their uses.

I suspect there are a lot of people in my position who'd leave if they could entice their friends to IM or to offline conversation where feasible. It's the hidden facebook users, there because they essentially have to be.

For the annoying share on facebook/twitter buttons (the former raised the idea that FB may be tracking logged in users) use the ghostery extension for Firefox and Chrome

I'm only on FB because it helps me keep in touch with a few old friends from Uni, although I tend to use the telephone and even the good old letter if I have anything personal to discuss. It is vaguely useful as a photo-hosting site, but scans of negatives are never quite up to the original. However, that's a different compartment in my life. TBH, I would just as soon give up on it and go back to my old life of quiet desperation.

As I said above, I don't bother with Facebook or Twitter because i can do everything I want already without them.

However I work in IT so I'm not adverse to new technology, and with disruption at Stalybridge today I noticed the twitter feed link on the National Rail Service Disruptions site, so I clicked on it (hoping to get some up-to-date gen) and the first "tweet" I see is this :(

syba.jpg

So perhaps I shan't be bothering with Twitter any time soon.

Butts you need to get on twitter. Its brilliant. And we need your anti antismoking brigade rants on there to join us.

Also there's a few good accounts that rip politicians and that on there.

In all seriousness twitter and FB help me keep bang up to date with music and forthcoming records and special releases that may not get into the shops. Its amazing just how much new music and artists I've discovered through them both and for that I can be thankful.

Even some ukrainian jazz which was enlightening

Eh.....I am pro-smoking are there a lot of anti-smokers on there ?

I think he meant to say anti-"anti-smoking" brigade in his posting.

I totally share your sentiments. Maybe I am "the old dog who can't be taught new tricks"...:oops:

I still use a Parker Sonnet fountain pen for writing certain personal letters.
