The Lumia range impress me too, I nearly got one but opted for the HTC instead. Apple are a nightmare, I thought I would lose all my, very expensive, iTunes collection when I left iPhones behind but was glad that on Android or Blackberry, probably Windows too, you can get all the iTunes tracks and remove the DRM thing.
Specs aren't the be all and end all of smart phone. And why would you want a phone running Windows when there are hardly any apps for it? Apple have best app store tbh. I've had an iPhone 4 for a few years and am very happy with it.

I'm currently running a android system and I found that yes there are some apps only on apple like railmiles but there's some apps only on Android like Bus Scout. Its swings and roundabouts as far as I am concerned.
Even though the individual app is not available there is probably a different one that does exactly the same job; eg I just found an iOS app that seems to do everything the Bus Scout app you mentioned does - in fact it looks so good I'm thinking of purchasing it! Apps tend to come out on iOS, also.

I don't have one but a couple of our company mobiles are iPhone 5's.
To be honest, my view is that for someone with a 4 or 4S running the latest iOS, you'll notice very little difference (don't have one of those either, but again have dealt with some of the company ones)

I used to work in the mobile industry, one thing I observed over time was that iphones seemed to have a higher failure rate than other brands due to moisture damage compared to other phones (often due to moisture in the air as opposed to being physically dunked in water).
The Samsung S range has much of the same functionality anyway.

I don't have an iPhone 5, nor do I particularly want one, but I see that the December 2012 edition of Which? Magazine gives the iPhone 5 a test score of 90% and describes it as "the best phone we've ever tested". The Samsung Galaxy Slll "your next best bet" is rated 83%.
As for moisture, a member of my staff left an iPhone 4 (switched off, fortunately) in clothing and it went through a low temp fast wash cycle. Sensibly, she left it long enough to dry out but it worked fine when switched back on. I wouldn't try it myself (my daughter got her Samsung soaked a week after she got it and it didn't ever recover - she had to put up with her old phone for another two years).

Not an apple man but have a iPhone4s and a iPad3 and love them both they are very reliable stable great features and super simple to use great apps and accessories

The missus and I have both have the iPhone 5 (both had the iPhone 4 for 2 years before that) and it's perfect for what I need it for in particular. Had a slight issue with the case I bought for it in as much as it appeared to be interfering with the proximity sensor so I'd cut out from time to time whilst talking so I've removed the phone from the case and have not had the issue again. That case was shiny plastic rather than fabric, the missus has a fabric case and has not had any issues.
The missus did have the Samsung Galaxy S3 but it went back after a week of faffing around trying to get the wireless signal to stay active (despite much googling and Orange Customer Care assistance etc...)

I tend to find the range and quality of Apps to be better on iOS when compared to Android. In a way this shouldn't be a massive surprise. iOS has been going longer than Android and thanks to it's walled garden policy allows Apple to be selective in what Apps are permitted. Android will probably catch up in time mind you.
What frustrates me with Android is the Tablet forms. Everyone says that an iPad is just an inflated iPhone. Nonsense. If that's the case then so is any Android tablet. The OS is the same is it not? The iPad has a lot of Apps specifically designed for the iPad whereas Android seems to be quite the opposite in this respect. It cannot be because they were late to the party either. Android tablets have been widely available for some time. The Nexus 7 is an excellent tablet too. Brilliantly specced. Just a shame about the Apps side of things!
Ultimately these things boil down to personal choice though really. It all depends on what is important to you.

Like has been said, swings and roundabouts, Apple have a lot of paid apps and lets not forget, Apple won't endorse and app if they don't like it, Android however is not as packed app wise but they haven't been around as long, that said the Android store is open source so lots more free apps and non Android backed apps, I've got a few.
Plus I'd like to dare someone with an iPhone to use something like mp3raid or tubidy, Apple go mental about people not downloading legal music.
And a ton of free ones too. And I'd rather pay for a great app than get a mediocre one for free

Tubidy mobile website works fine on the iPhone. And, as far as music is concerned, you can download whatever you want from any source and load it onto your iOS device as easy as pie.
I don't want to turn this in to apple vs android/rest but does android have a cloud service where you can upload your files/music/videos to the cloud and stream them to other mobile devices? ...and as part of that service allow you to upgrade your library to new 256kb audio files in the process?

I believe so. Play Music is very recent over here and I've never used it because I believe in having a local connection instead of trusting the cloud.
I've never had an iPhone because I abhor Apple's walled garden environment and prefer the openness of Android.
I wonder if there is an equivalent of XDA for iPhone users?

Dropbox doesn't upgrade your music. It [dropbox] is a storage facility for files where you can retrieve them later.
I'd hardly call 128 to 256 an upgrade, more so given that 320kbps is "standard" for lossy files now. If it doesn't entail grabbing new songs from the server and deleting the old ones it's not an upgrade just like putting a sticker on my freeview box makes it a sky box. Really though any cloud system that isn't cross platform is locking you in.

Im sorry but what? What you are talking about being available on itunes is you actually paying to get better quality mp3s. You cant just uncompress a 128 file into 256 or 320 it doesnt work like that.
To be able to do the same with Android then you would have to purchase it all over again.
I generally stay away from Apple V anything else arguements as its not worth the effort.
I just got a HTC one XL on EE and its smashing. Tethers nicely to my Nexus 7 and I love me Nexus 7 also just the right size for what I want it for.
Google has Google Music which will now offer full quality music to match what you already had, like iTunes. Before that you uploaded your music into the cloud, which I did from my iTunes data. Worked fine, even if it took a while.
I've got 80GB of Google cloud storage, which costs me $20 a year! Sadly, now Apple charges a lot more for iCloud, Google has raised its charges too.
Android developers have only fairly recently (Android v3 and up) been given more defined style guidelines, so that's why many apps looked haphazard (especially on tablets). That's something Apple was strict on from day one of allowing third party apps.

It doesn't convert old to new. Your library is matched to the iTunes library server and if a match is found you can either stream or download a new audio file.
The ability to do this is contained within the price for iCloud. It even matches songs that were not bought via iTunes. If you choose not to re subscribe at the end of the year you can cancel but still keep your new 256 files which are also DRM free.
