Touched out at Forest Hill this evening, the reader went green, opened the gate, as I walked through, it appears a fellow passenger touched out which went red and shut the gate on me.

Touched out again which went red, the gateline supervisor asked me to do the same again. Told him I have a 7 day Travelcard and accepted my version of events and let me out.

Have I answered my own question with the fellow passenger touching out? I was able to board a bus afterwards, but slightly concerned I may have done something to affect my travelling on rail tomorrow. The online site still shows a + PAYG balance mind.

A similar incident happened to me before, except there was too slow and there was no passenger behind me. I couldn't touch through again as the gate thought that I was the other side. I was let out by gateline staff and there was no problem using the card the next day

Do you remember the numerical error code number that showed when you tried to tap out again?

If Oyster Online isn't showing an incomplete journey I suspect that it has let you out the first time and the refused the second on a double tap or passback error, can tell you with the code number.

I couldn't read the numerical error code as it was the smaller LCD display.

Indeed. 22 should be the code if you have just touched out already (for example if you touch out on a platform validator then at a gateline as well also). If it's 35 or 36 you have no money :P (having a negative balance disables a season travelcard on your Oyster)

Considering I was able to board a bus and the Oyster reader went green with the display said "Travelcard" I should be ok? :)

This often happens if the person IN FRONT of you does not have a valid ticket. Common scam apparently.

They walk into the gate area, touch on Oyster card (or not). It fails. You touch on and gate "opens" for them. They walk through and gate closes on you.

Basically taking advantage of the fact that some barriers don't close before they let the next person through.

That's a new one on me, I've been victim of the behind trick where they walk right behind you, then barge you as you pass the gate.

Oyster Online's journey history just shows a normal touch in and out.

Yes that's fine. With a Travelcard you do not strictly need to touch in/out... as long as you stay within your zones. By the sounds of it the journey was completed anyway :)

Is it written down that all oyster users need to touch it on a bus?

When articulated buses were in operation, only PAYG users were required to use the readers, although I remember my Mother having a ding dong with a TfL RPI a few years back when she didn't touch in with a period bus pass, mainly because I think it was due to her having the Bus & Tram photocard at the time.

There're still two bus routes without compulsory Oyster touching-in, and they're the former Red Arrow routes 507 and 521. They used to have bendy buses, but continue to use special single deckers with lots of standing space and permit entry from either door.

They do close though....that's why you're stuck on the wrong side and they've gone through!!

Someone did it to me once (2003-4ish, early days of Oyster, so lots of paper tickets still). These days, I make a deliberate point of not swiping my Oyster or inserting a ticket until the gates have opened for the person in front of me. Nips that scam in the bud quite nicely!! :)

They use the non-articulated Mercedes bus so look similar to the bendys from the front.

I presume the new Routemasters don't have compulsory touch in for travelcards.

Depends on the guard - some require you to touch in or show him your ticket before you sit down :)

By the way, I got a Oyster Usage Statement from the ticket office this morning and it shows a Code 22 with no charge.
