For returning back, how about a lovely sprinter on the daily train to Cardiff Central then catch the daily Heart of Wales Line onto Shrewsbury then up to Crewe and the way you came in going out from Crewe? With this though, you might have to stay the night in Cardiff

The timings for the Penzance to Shrewsbury are:

6:00 Penzance-Cardiff central arr 12:18
stay the night
08:11 Cardiff Central-Shrewsbury arr 13:08

Exactly why im not bothering. Another crack of dawn departure.
Wouldnt catch me stopping for the day at midday either.

Anyway, checking the new ATW timetables. There seems to be a 1419 from Chester to Maestaeg. Would I be dreaming, imagining that this could be a 158?

You could use that train onto Bristol as well, and catch a sprinter onto Worcester again and catch a 153 plugged onto a turbostar diagram to Galton bridge, use an ATW sprinter to Shrewsbury and then onto Crewe-Derby-Nottingham-Manchester OR Galton Bridge-Chester then a northern sprinter to Manchester, however I can't confirm timings or workings yet, i'll do ity later as I am sending this right in the middle of an ICT at school and I don't think the teacher would be happy to see me on NRE and OTT!

But im not doing it. Im not getting up at the crack of dawn again just to head back. Had I been able to get a decent time train from Penzance, then perhaps. But I cant. So just a one way trip for me. I can then use my time in Cornwall to do all the branches I havent done yet (which is all of them!)

Oh right, sorry for the misleading information. I had not realized that you didn't want to do a return, you had mentioned it in an earlier post and I thought you wanted to do it.

Good luck on the Cornwall branches. I completed them all in the summer, some of them are really nice in terms of scenery. The St Ives bay line is a good one as you follow the bay from Lelant Saltings and you see lots of water and beaches. The Falmouth line doesn't do much in terms of scenery but you get a nice view over the Penryn area. I don't remember much about the Newquay line, it was dark when I had used it. Looe line is ok, don't really see much but trees until the approach to Looe where you are alongside water. The Gunnislake line is the best one IMHO though, after St Budeux you pass under the Tamar Bridge and you get some waterside line then a few fields and that, reversal at Bere Alston then over the Calstock viaduct which is very nice as well.

I wish you well on your ALR :D

I thought it was 158 myself but can't be too sure.

On a separate note, how did you know that the working would be a 158 just by looking at that? And how do you use Open train times to see what stock the service will use? A very complicated site, I don't know how to use it. I wouldn't ask half the questions I ask on here if I knew how to see what stock operates on services I want to look at.

When I checked it had it down as '158' 100mph. Apparently that will mean a 175. If it was a 158, it says '158' 90mph.

It does work as well. Try it for Scotrail on the Inverness workings i first mentioned. The 1045 is down as '158' 90mph, whilst the rest are all down for '158' 100mph (ie a class 170)

Whatever open train times states, this booked for 3 Coach 175. 3 Coach priority for overcrowdibg purposes. What Open train times quotes is a class for timimng purposes and not what is diagrammed

You can't.

Going into 'advanced mode' (by clicking on the gear wheels at the top of the screen) will show you what type of vehicle the service timings are based on - not what type of unit is booked to operate it.

In this case, it says the timings are based on a 75mph Class 150/153/155/156 DMU. But that just means that a 150 could run and still keep to time - if a 175 was not available.

Well yes it only gives you what class/ speed the timings are based on. But when it tells you its based on 100mph, thats a sure fire bet its a 175, just as i said.

But from this info you can use common sense or you can deduct what type of stock is booked

Not really, as the timings are normally scheduled to accomodate the slowest stock that may run on the route. A lot of class 17* are scheduled to 15* timings.

But for the train i mentioned, it says its timed at 100mph, and it doesnt say its LHCS. It says 158. So there is only one possibility. The 175 is all that would keep to time. So its a very very good chance its a 175.

Well you can, like junglejames has done. I'm not saying you can do it all of the time with 100% correct results, but you sometimes
