Boundary Zone 6 <> Maidstone Stations

I have a quick query, I have been trying to figure out how to use Routeing points etc but cant get my head around it so thought I'd ask you lot!

Basically this afternoon I need to get:

From Victoria > Maidstone East.

And to return

Maidstone West/Barracks > Charing Cross. (Via Strood/Gravesend)

I already have a Anytime Day Travelcard 1-6 so was going to purchase a Boundary Zone 6 > Maidstone STNS return.

Will the return part of the Boundary Zone 6 > Maidstone ticket be valid using the route via Strood, plus would I be allowed to break my journey at Gravesend?

Yes. One of the maps showing Permitted Routes for this journey is NK. This allows travel via Strood and Gravesend.

would I be allowed to break my journey at Gravesend?

Yes. Break of journey is allowed on all types of Day Returns Boundary Zone 6 - Maidstone Stns route Any Permitted.

On the subject, something I've always wondered is: how does one apply the routeing guide when using boundary zone tickets? For example, let's say I have a zone 1–6 travelcard and a boundary zone extension to St. Margarets on the Hertford East line. I wish to travel there directly from London, so I catch a train from Liverpool Street. However, I then wish to proceed to Crews Hill.

Is the ticket valid? Via Hertford North isn't a permitted route for a journey from St. Margarets to London, according to National Rail Enquiries (it says I need two tickets). However, St. Margarets to Crews Hill via Hertford North is of course permitted – it's the most obvious route. Seeing as boundary tickets are extensions from London, it seems like a grey area to me.

I do realise I could get around the problem by buying an extension to Hertford Stations instead and breaking the outward journey at St. Margarets, but that seems like an inelegant solution. Either way, I'd be interested to know how exactly permitted routes can be calculated when using boundary zone tickets: essentially, should routes always be calculated using London Terminals as an origin/destination, or can one choose any origin/destination within zones covered by one's travelcard?

The validity of a Boundary Zone 6 extension has been clarified by ATOC.

It is only valid if used with a valid Travelcard/Freedom pass that covers zone 6.
It is valid to the first crossing of the outer boundary of Zone 6, using any permitted route (observing any fare related restriction) to any station within zones 1-6 that the associated Travelcard/Freedom pass is valid to.
