Hey guys.

New to this forum so go easy if all this sounds stupid!

I unfortunately missed the most recent round of GA trainee driver recruitment as I was training as a pilot, motivated in part to show my suitability for the train driver role (will this look good?!) given that the operating environments are very similar I hope it will! Anyway, I contacted GA asking if I could send them an application and CV and covering letter regardless in the hope to be kept in the system somewhere for their next recruitment drive, their HR representative said I could download an application and send it in so that is what I have done, just wondered what you guys thoughts were on this? Is it likely to help? Will it be ignored as a 'late' application? Will someone actually read it do you think, despite them being in the middle of a recruitment drive?

Anyways thanks for your time, look forward to hopefully getting a shot at assessment next time around!

There are 000's of applicants for every trainee job so dont just rely on them remembering you! You training as a pilot will have done your chances a lot of good as there is a lot of transferable experience there. A little confused though as to why you havent gone onto become a comercial pilot?

Hey thanks for the reply, appreciate the advice. I will keep and eye out and hope that my sending an application in earlier does something to improve my chances, regardless I'll apply as many times as I have to! What traction are the current trainees training on? The 317s?

Well I trained as a pilot both to showcase my suitability to the similar environments and because I love to fly! These are both industries I would love to work in, but I'm choosing to pursue the role of a train driver, not sure what lead me to that decision but that's where I've ended up! It was a choice between the two and I cannot find work as a pilot. but I invested a lot of time and effort and money into showing I have the skills of operating within safety critical environments, alone, and that I have the important communication skills required of train drivers, given my rather young age I felt I needed something that would stand out on my application!

Sadly, the position that I am in means that I don't have the finance required to pay another 30k for a type rating that most airlines demand, it's made the career totally not viable! My skills transfer nicely into the role of train driver so that's how I make sense of it!

Im quite a keen flyer myself and hope to do my PPL at some point. I totally understand what you mean. I see a lot of airlines want hundreds of hours on type!

With regards to what you sign it depends entirely on what depot you are at. I sign 321 and 360. But other depots sign 156, 170, 379, 90's, 08's, 317, 315, and and a couple more which I forget.

Im sure the fact you have got yourself a pilots license will be of huge benefit to you in the application process.

That's what I like to hear! Good luck for when you do it! Where is your closest airfield? What depot you based at?

Yeah that's the issue, if you're not type rated then its anything from 9-30k for a rating even then you need minimum of 500hrs total time! Alas, I knew all of this before embarking on my training so I won't act like I am hard done by, I have other reasons for doing it!

Oh right I see, what are the 360s like to drive? From what I've seen the cab looks a little cramped, or is that totally misguided? I personally have a soft spot for the 317 so would be secretly hoping to sign those if I were to be employed by GA! Haha

I hope it has some merit and the experiences/training is worth while!

Im currently at Clacton but am moving to Colchester as soon as a link becomes available as I live in Colchester. My nearest airfield is Clacton but I do a lot of flying on MSFS with a lot of extremely realistic addons and all the settings on hard. Hopefully that will give me a head start when I start my flying for real.

The 360's are fine the cab has loads of room. The only problem with them is the brakes are not as precise as the 321 as they are computer controled and there isnt as much feel to them.

If you are desperate to sign 317's you need to be over on the west ie chingford, cambridge or bishops stortford as they all sign 317. But that is limiting your options quite a lot. Also remember you need to live within 20 miles of your depot!

Yeah I live closest to bishops stortford so that would have to be my choice regardless of what they sign! Any indications when you're going to recruit again?

Hi I'm at GA and was wondering how far in pilot training you have gone and done? Have you fATPL, ppl? Where did you train?

I did my PPL at 17 then CPL and IR a short while ago! I did my PPL at my local aerodrome but the rest I did at Oxford Aviation Academy, I did it modular. I'm studying an engineering degree and trying to get more freelance instructing but getting anywhere is proving difficult!

Yeah I'll be keeping an eye out, hopefully something will come up! I'll get my chance one day haha. Seems I'm far from the only one who has interests in both industries, you fly as well?

Your instrument rated as well. Wow lol. I fly 737 and 747 as thy are he most detailed addons I have and I use radar contact for ATC.

Anyway I will keep an eye out for when we are recruiting and let you know.

Sounds good, I've used RC before too, really nice program! With the NGX it's very real! Yeah doing the IR seemed a little excessive but a friend who owns a twin often needs it shuttled around so that is giving me work while I wait for a the trainee driver position to come up!
