other bus drivers: what would you have done

Strange question, but the other day I was driving a service bus in Yorkshire for a small independent, and someone got on with a First staff pass.

The independent is one that gives drivers the power to use discretion and common sense, and I personally would always allow bus staff from other companies to travel for free.

I noticed an ENCTS card is the same wallet as this guys staff pass, and asked if hed touch it to the reader so we got a bit of money, and he refused to this and started acting as though I told him he had to do something unpleasant.

Was I unreasonable?

Unless you have a formal arrangement with the other operator then no, you are in theory protecting your companies revenue by recording the concession travel

Not unreasonable at all if his pass wasn't valid. You were doing him a favour, although I suppose if you'd refused his First pass then he'd have used his other pass.

Bit strange behaviour though, him not wanting to touch when it wouldn't have cost him anything.

Perhaps he gets a thrill out of using his staff pass?!

Maybe he had something to hide by not touching in, fraudulent passes perhaps

Reading this has made me think of something, and I do apologise for a slight hijack beforehand, but In Leicester, all the major and minor public service companies do have staff passes but when say a first driver gets on a centrebus service they just walk on, the drivers never ask to see their passes, which i find a bit odd, if they are concessionary travellers, then why not make it so that all drivers from all companies have to tap their passes on the machines?

Looking after each other, I'd imagine they all know each other anyway, even though driving for other companies. I've always been taught to look after my own. In this case driver looking after another driver, irrelevant of uniform.

In Manchester I always allow 'rival' drivers on; and have been allowed on by other companies even though there is no official agreement; even the inspectors allow it.

In some areas, there is agreement I think. I often see First and TM Travel drivers on the Supertram, I assumed there must be an agreement across SYPTE land.
